About a year ago, I posted a sketch of the Core 4 and the Sugar Rush racers gathered around a firepit enjoying a little R&R as a family. It was a piece of tie-in fanart linked to a fanfiction I wrote a month earlier titled Go See the World. The plot of that story was about Litwak’s arcade having to temporarily close its doors due to the Covid-19 outbreak, and Ralph was beginning to feel depressed from the inactivity. And with that inactivity, his uncertainty of what might end up happening to him and his friends. But by the end of the story, the entire family gathers here and Ralph gains a much better perspective of their future.

Now that some time has passed, Go See the World is definitely my favourite story out of all the ones I’ve written, even beating out the recently-completed story Devastated, which has been my passion project for over a year. Weird how that is, since I wrote GStW after a spark of inspiration struck me in the middle of the night: “How would Covid-19 affect WiR?” Their universe operates by different rules, but is still affected by real-life events in different ways. But that’s not the reason why I love this story. The real reason is because it gave every main and supporting character the spotlight at least once. Everyone you see in that picture has something to do and gets dialogue. Plus, we learn little things about them that we never knew before like Adorabeezle’s fear of Pac-Man. The key is that they’re not used as tools, but as characters. It’s the closest I’ve ever gotten to creating what I wish to see from Disney should they ever decide to pick up WiR again whether through a TV series or even a third movie. But seeing as they have wrecked Ralph, continue to market the other racers as rotten cavities, and essentially written Vanellope out, I don’t have enough faith in the current writers to craft together what me and many other fans have longed for.

Regardless, fast forward a year later to today, November 2, 2021, and the pandemic is still going strong. I’d say this story and the message it contains remain relevant. It’s a little sprinkle of hope for those who might be feeling like Ralph during these very rough times. Not only that, but today November 2 marks the ninth anniversary of Wreck-It Ralph. So to commemorate it, I decided to bring this sketch back in full colour and give it a fresh breath of life. Last year, I missed it by about a week. Wasn’t going to be tardy again!
