Description I would've put this in doodles and sketches, but I'm sharing this with others participating in 's trek through the books of Andrew Loomis. The book we're going through now, Fun with a Pencil, is awesome in a big way, even if I got lazy in some of the sketches from this week.

I think it's really interesting how people's unique styles are retained, even with a similar exercise. You'd think the shapes would force people to adopt a specific style, but so far everyone's have looked quite unique! I really like the expressiveness on these too! Especially Granny.

It is pretty interesting! There's a certain amount of similarity in the more rounded features I think, but you're right about the styles. And I'm glad you like Granny; it's funny, because expression has been something I've struggled with in the past, but lately I'm getting quite a bit better at it.

Thanks again for sharing Loomis with us; there's very little chance I'd have come across these on my own, and already I think working through these is helping me.

It is my pleasure to share. Since he's not widely published anymore, it's very hard to find his books, but I think they're really easy to read and work with! I think we're all going to learn a lot by working on this project together!

Eee! These ARE interesting, in a good way. I like the guy on the top left - for some reason he reminds me of a carnie. Not sure why. I love how Granny Frogmouth looks old, just from the way you drew her and the subtle creases at the corner of her eyes. And a mohawk! I've never been able to draw mohawks. ^__))) The bottom right is delightfully odd.

I need to work on getting proportions right, but then I did get too lazy to fix anything. Like how low Frogmouth's mouth is, and how the dip in the side of her head is below her eye.

But yes, I'm glad you like these!

Sometimes, though, those imperfections and improper proportions are what give a face character. After all, not everyone's face is in perfect proportion to what the IDEAL is. I didn't see any of these things when I was looking at them, really.

You make a good point! I think that's one of the reasons why some of my bigger mistakes go unnoticed until I'm finished: I obsess over little things that don't matter to the point that I'm too worn to focus on anything else.

But yeah, I'll keep your words in mind next time I go to make faces.

Goodness knows some of the mistakes I make in my art end up being boons in the long run. And generally it's easier to see your own mistakes - most things that I think are wrong most people never see. I think that affects all of us.
