Description
This is from my series of famous men without the moustache. This one is Vlad "Dracula" Tepes, father of the legend of Dracula, prince of Wallachia and famous insane mass murderer... But without the stache is just a regular Joe with a funny hat!Related content

This is what all those clean-shaven movie Draculas would look like in real life.

The portrait on which you based this image was a propaganda type poster made by a Hungarian ruler. It was meant to make him look like a caricature. The real portrait of him is quite different.

I didn't know that, and going by the fact that many portraits of that time look silly to people of our time, I thought it was more or less accurate. I would love to see this real portrait you talk about.

A little lower on the page youțll see the more familiar portrait too (with a red cross over it) and under neath the actual portrait.

Interesting how many Dracula adaptions have him stache-less.

Can you imagine the Twilight movies with the male lead in a civil war mustache? I would watch that.

Not bad. i respect and partly admire Vlad Tepes, despite the things what he did. Heck, people have done worst, he was just doing what he needed to, and people have labeled him a monster, only through rumors and his fictional counter part. Nice image. personally, i like him without the moustache nice work

Thanks, and also thanks for sharing your views on Vlad Tepes, they're very different from what I've heard, and that's a plus.

I think that horrible acts become less horrible as time passes, which is kinda sad but it is also healthy for everyone as humans. So, the other details surrounding his biography are quite cool and I choose to emphasize those things when thinking of him

Ah see i think the same i admit he is not a saint, misunderstood ect. But i think people judge him too harshly without even knowing all the real facts about him. his up bringing was very harsh, he grew up in war ect. and you needed to be very ruthless at the time if you wanted to stay on the throne ect. But i guess it's just like Richard III. Lots of people judge him as the evil character ect. but there is a fraction that defends his name. I guess since these men aren't alive today and there is no real solid evidence to defend them, other people must.
sory, bet i'm boring you

Not at all, I love history and the "relativity of ethics" that the distance from events causes. Right now we feel that a terrostist attack is a heinous act (I think it is, too) but we think of the Gengis Khan or Attila and we think of them as interesting, complex historical figures, not as mere mass murderers.

Agreed i guess views over time change, just like the minds of people. however an image may stay forzen in history, the way people judge is forever changing. nice to meet someone who isn't one sided. I like to hear both sides of the story before coming to a judgement. but then again do we have a right to judge ? we only have a right to an opinion
Who is your fav historical figure ? Mine is of course Vlad Tepes.

It's difficult for me to choose, but my favorite I think is William Blake.

Oh yes i like William Blake too. mostly his art and poems you have good taste in people
ever heard of Elizabeth (?) Bathory ? a.k.a the bloody countess. some say she's worse than Vlad Tepes. i too think she is an interesting historical character, though fairly darker and more sinister too.

Ah, yes, Ersebeth Bathory, a fascinating character of history. I think her reputation might have been victim of sexism, though, it wouldn't be the first female to be likened to the Devil.

shiannitako In reply to thecarlosmal [2010-10-22 16:11:55 +0000 UTC]
That is quite true. But i don't have much sympathy for her as Vlad Tepes. Ersebath Bathory was apparently a vain woman, you know the whole bathing of blood. but then again is it true ? or just rumors ? She was very powerful for a woman at that time. rivals for her power might have just tried to dis-credit her. thing is i can't find much positive insight her character, so it's hard to make a judge with one side.

I sincerely think that it was all a fabrication of her enemies. She was probably a little bit eccentric, and I guess a few thing she did were blown waaaaay out of proportion. Too bad we'll never know what was true and what was false. But in the other hand, that's kind of the charm of history.

again very true. Being in that situation must be stressful, even more for a woman of that time. and her death was quite tragic. eventually she was put on trial for all the 'murders', and well, since she was nobility, she couldn't be executed. so she was confined to a room, no windows ect. and was fed through a small hole in the wall. rumor was the guards wanted to see the woman for her famed beauty, and found her dead on the floor, face down. possibly died weeks before. i would hate to go that way. to go un-noticed and slow

When I read about the circumstances around her imprisonment and death I prefer to believe that she was indeed evil murderer. I'm a comfort-driven reader of History

Indeed. as i said, i see her more as a negative figure...or well... hard to explain. I guess i'm more of a Vlad Tepes fan i am actually writing a historical novel, set in tudor times
read any good historical novels ? i have finished that novel called 'Vlad: the last confession'

Well, that is actually very impressive, that you're writing a historical novel. I admire the dedication to historical knowledge that is needed for the writing of a historical novel. I have read quite a few, but all in Spanish; the last one I read was about Jeanne D'arc, and I quite liked it (I forgot to mention that Jeanne D'arc is one of my favorites too). Is your novel centered on a historical figure of the Tudor times or is it about a non-famous character that lives in that period of time?

Thank you i've always wanted to be a novelist, and well, i've thought of tons of ideas (all historical) but this is the first i've started. I too like historical novels, and of course, history
well my novels(s) are abit complicated. they are staged in real history, but with fictional characters. for example this novel i am writing now is around Hnerby VIII and Catherine of Aragon's marriage. My character doesn't change the history, she is there to witness it. also, the focus is more on the wives. my character grows closer to Catherine of Aragon, and in the next novel i plan, the focus will be Anne Boleyn. I tend to like studying historical women. It just seems like alot of the focus is on men (which may be true, but still)

Not sure about this one.
I agree that every other else in this series does looks like a regular joe, but not this one.
He actually looks a bit worse.
He looks a lot more like he needs to impale someone. Well the point is taht he still looks like who he is, and not a regular joe.
The other point is that this manip is very cool as always, and it was very well done.
