Hi, I drew a Vortian and wanted to ask what you think of it. Head looks a little weird (just in advance)

I think they look adorable and very square! ;u;
I like the compact face, good proportioning and foot stance.
You did a wonderful job on this little fella! <3

Hey, happy to help!
Even if this is mostly just a bunch of silly goop that I came up with. If it helped me to figure it out, it aught to help a lot of other people figure it out, too!
Thank you very much and you're welcome!

Maybe Vortians have something on the very tips of their feet that's kind of like gecko velcro, to help them stay upright? They do have a very small area to stand on.Β
And I bet they shift their feet pretty often when they're just standing still.
Hmm... That design, with the horse-like feet, it has two other non-visible toes. Let's say we had a Vortian/something-with-feet hybrid. Suppose it might end up with small toes there, too? Like the little dewclaw-toes dogs sometimes have.Β
OMG I JUST REALIZED
VORTIANS WOULD BE EXCELLENT BALLERINAS.Β
Suggestion: draw a Vortian skeleton. Not all incredibly detailed, but something that shows the general shape of the bones.Β
π: 0 β©: 1
TheCau In reply to Betta132 [2014-10-09 02:27:28 +0000 UTC]
I don't think that velcro would really be needed. Klipspringers and other cervids/equines/ovids get along just fine on their own toes without any sticky-ness to keep them glued to the ground. In which, if they lived in an extremely low-grav environment, then that would probably be applicable somehow.
Idk about hybridization. When it comes down to it, some traits are suppressed, some are enhanced, and others are added. A lot of times, the outcome is extremely weird, sterile, and unstable in one way or another. Could result in extra toes, could result in shorter feet, etc.
I don't really wanna draw an entire skeleton unless I need to do it for my own reference. This leg tutorial was born because I got my idea down on paper for myself and then it evolved into something that everybody seemed to need so I added to it and posted it.

It would depend on how tiny the tips of the toes are, I suppose. I mean, deer/horses/etc do have a flat surface on the bottom of the toe. The way some people draw them, a Vortian probably has an area of maybe half a square inch per toetip.Β
Yeah, hybrids are one of the slightly more iffy aspects of this kind of thing. Have to be really careful with that, as some things simply can't hybridize. It kind of depends on the writer, and also the species/circumstances involved. I swear I saw a vortian/dragon (as in, full-on dragon) hybrid once...Β
Then again, if you've got some scifi stuff and a mad scientist to throw into the mix, you can kinda just go nuts with genetic modification.Β

Dude this was EXACTLY what I needed. Recently I have gotten into drawing irkens. And I dun goofed. I did the wretched "pidgen toe"
Sorry for spamming my work but I think I did the legs wrong. :C halp?
On a side note, I love this tutorial and the effort you put into it making it a beautiful well thought-out comic. Great use of canon-characters too! I almost never see those guys!

TheCau In reply to AnnaKlava [2014-09-23 02:20:30 +0000 UTC]
Lol, great! I'm glad that it's still getting a bit of use!
Oh, the pigeon toe thing is totally fine as long as there's a more defined sense of balance and gravity with the shape/positioning of the leg versus the body. You didn't do too bad at all for getting into drawing Vortians. vuv
It's just something you keep in mind and refine as time goes by. Of course, that center of gravity changes while in motion so it'll be different from a character standing around statically.
Hahaha! And thank you again! I seriously think these canon characters need more love and recognition. They were so great in the show. ;A; <3

Thank you! And by the way, I've been putting this to good use, so I'm usually keeping this page bookmarked since I am drawing Vortians more often.Β
I find the movement way harder in the feet and drawing that.

TigerDragon1001 [2014-08-16 15:05:20 +0000 UTC]
Woaah, now this is a really cool idea. Finally a logical way to draw them with pointy feet! I've seen other people speculate that they have goat legs but that's not how it looks in the show.. Now you've given a neat alien leg theory and a way to draw them like in canon. Thanks! Definitely gonna try drawing more Vortians now hehe

You know now that I think about it the legs is probably why a lot of people don't draw vortains o.O

TheCau In reply to wolfphantom21 [2014-07-20 23:22:08 +0000 UTC]
Probably. It's kinda daunting sometimes but I hope this'll get more people into drawing them.
I tried to take out all of the scary technicalities and stuff and make it easier to digest and understand so hopefully there'll be more people attempting to draw them.

this is pretty epic!
although i kinda wish IZ fandom peoples
would just leave the hybrid thing alone.
sometimes we cant help it and alot of people have done it
and i know ive seen my fair share of REALLLYYY HOORRIBLEEΒ hybrids
but not all of us are like that
also.
im pretty sure johnen said the Vorts walked on Hocks
so thats why alot of people who draw them as hooves do.
but i love this!
O,O
like i want to draw vortians more now. T^T
i wish i could draw.
π: 0 β©: 1
TheCau In reply to Pixelsnaxs [2014-05-09 05:26:22 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, scientifically speaking, hybridization between two unrelated species isn't a very viable thing most of the time when it comes to animals and whatnot.
The hock is actually just the long part of an animal's foot, aka the heel (where the tarsals are primarily located). I can understand why that can be somewhat ambiguous but, if you wanna draw something that hails the traits/details of the show, then we've got a really long, modified foot for these Vorts to walk on. C:
And I totes believe you can draw. Sketch away and see what comes out! <333

Thank You for making this Ms. Cau
Especially the perspective part.
I always just used reference things like Antelope or raptor legs for my Vortians.
But this is way better and clearer.
I really like the whole bone pic you did too, the just one giant toe with joints was a good input.
