Description What this is I don't even-

It's all Sheryl Chee's fault (Isabela's head writer). On the Isabela appreciation topic at the BSN, people were discussing Isabela theme songs. Sheryl said she considers this a theme for Isabela, but also offered TiK ToK as a sillier alternative. Normally I hate songs like it, but...

I have not been able to get this mental image out of my head since then. Plus, I wanted to draw Declan again, since he's my main Hawke.

So, enjoy this bout of silly stupidity.

EDIT: I did not intentionally draw Fenris doing Thriller. It was just a random pose off the top of my head. But since that's what it looks like, for the sake of argument, we'll say that's what he's dancing.

EDIT 2: DAMN. Barely 24 hours after I submit this and it's already got 140+ favs and 2,000+ views. I can't keep up with the comments at this point, guys. Chances are I won't reply to most of them at this point, but believe me - I read every single one and I appreciate them! Thanks for sharing in my goofy sense of humor.

Sad thing is, I'm now listening to that Ke$ha song because of this strip and it's not my kind of music but I can't stop listening to it and keep hitting replay

All because I keep picturing this page

I know! I would normally hate a song like TiK ToK, but when Sheryl linked it as a silly Isabela theme, I had to listen to it.

And then the mental images came.

And now I can't stop listening to a song I would normally loathe because I can't stop laughing.

Yeah, for someone like me who listens to NIN, MM, Korpiklaani to listen to TiK ToK, there has to be good reason - and what you created with your mental images is that good reason

I have a fairly varied taste in music, ranging from classic showtunes to folk to Viking death metal. I'm just not normally a fan of club-type songs. But yeah, the mental images TiK ToK creates thanks to Sheryl Chee make it an exception for me.

Well thanks for the info! There's stuff I have in my favorites that I'd just love to listen to over and over (one being a vid a friend made for FF that has this song Ashes to Ashes by Groove Addicts that I can't find anywhere since they aren't around anymore) and this means I can do it.

You're welcome. I tend to use YouTube (Repeat or no) a lot for songs I enjoy, but don't feel like buying. Or can't buy at the moment. Or can't find on iTunes.

Depending on if you like stuff with a bit of a techno beat, you should see if you can find a vid (better if it's the one by kiandaisuke) with that song I mentioned earlier. Wait a min, will just link it - it starts off with another song at the prelude of the vid (I'm a huge FF fan so I watch it a lot and now that I've heard the song, I constantly equate it with the vid) but then courses into Ashes to Ashes. My friend is a film student and I think he did a great job on this. I'm not sure if I like it more for the music or the visuals lol.

I don't mind techno stuff and I like some of the music from the older FF games (I stopped playing them after FFX - got more into Bioware and Bethesda-type RPGs at that point). I'm not extremely picky when it comes to music. But what you linked is very nice. I like it.

But for stuff I listen to more than other genres (character themes aside, as I pay more attention to lyrics than the music, obviously), I tend to love Ayreon and other various kinds of metal. Especially since there's a lot of variety and in Ayreon's case specifically, it's a long overarching story told through several songs and across albums. Off the top of my head, a few of my Ayreon favorites are Waracle , Isolation , and River of Time . The latter two make more sense in-context of the specific stories, though.

I'll have to check them out. While I do have a tendency to listen to a lot of stuff (I've got Loreena McKennitt, Enya, movie soundtracks, classical music i.e. Mozart, Tchaikovsky, etc. also in my iTunes library) it's mainly metal. Or some classic rock (especially Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven and there's one song where you can tell by the lyrics he's singing about Tolkien's LotR books but can't remember the name offhand).

I'm a huge music nerd. My dad instilled a love of music into me and I can't go anywhere or do anything without having it around me. I've found it I try to write with no music on in the background, I'm blocked. Music also helps the mundane tasks of normal life go by so much quicker (i.e. housecleaning, etc. lol).

And I think FFX-2 is the last one I played... wait a min, no, sorry, FFXII is the last one - Balthier ended up tying Tidus at the time for the sexiest FF male for me (and to have Fenris with his voice... oh holy Maker!). But, lost job, lost apartment, and had to sell PS2 and games so no more FF for me! First thing I'm going to do when I move back out on my own - buying another PS2 (and maybe a PS3) so I can get my old FF games back lol.

TheDalishRanger In reply to Dragonwyrd316 [2011-04-04 03:56:03 +0000 UTC]

I definitely have a metal/rock bias too, but I listen to almost anything. It really depends on my mood. I love instrumentals and things like Enya. I also listen to old rock/pop songs from the 50s-80s that my parents played all the time when I was a kid.

I'm not a music nerd in the sense that I can always pick out very subtle nuances or tell between some genres easily, but I am very, very passionate about listening to it. It's a major source of inspiration for me and I love the variety of stories and emotions I can find in various music. Some songs I like more for the lyrics even if the music is lacking, but other songs I like for the opposite - iffy lyrics, but great music.

Oh yeah... I did play FFX-2. I forgot about that. I must've blocked it from my memory.

Ah, so is that the Balthier people keep talking about when people mention Fenris? I knew he had something to do with Final Fantasy, but that's it. Never played XII or later, so I know pretty much nothing about them.

Boo on the lost job. I'm still looking for full time work myself. And stuck with living with my parents until I can find work so I can afford to move out again. -.-; I don't get enough from freelancing to live off of it.

Lost job - but new one starts soon. Orientation on Wednesday! Woot! And I hear you about living with the 'rents. Try being in your 30's and stuck living with them. Talk about nasty - too often they tend to forget I'm an adult.

And I listen to a lot of 50-80's music - 50-70's stuff is what my parents listened to, 80's-90's is what I grew up with. Fell in love with Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Stone Temple Pilots. Beck's Loser is still one of my favorites. I also grew up playing piano and flute so I actually can tell the subtle nuances without even trying which sometimes really sucks because one off note has me wincing like someone else would with nails on a chalkboard. I've found that lately I don't really listen to a lot of mainstream music and the stuff I listen to lately is a lot of Norse rock/metal or Celtic rock/metal. I don't know if it's because I'm, in my own way, going back to my roots or what.

And yes, that's the Balthier people keep talking about when they mention Fenris. He was one of the main characters of XII. If I can pick up any of my old FF games, I don't know if I'll do X-2 or not (kind of annoyed me, but I liked searching for Tidus lol), but I do know I'll be picking up X and XII if I can.

I don't even have a new one lined up. Alternating between commissions, job hunting, and classes (I already have a BFA, but I'm back in school for a computer security certification to help with said job hunt). But hey - at least you have a new one lined up! Whoo!

I have absolutely no musical talents whatsoever. Tried playing the trombone in the fifth grade... Thing was as big as I was. Didn't go anywhere with it. Best I can do is play a few songs off the top of my head on a piano. But I can't read music - I just have the keys for the songs memorized.

Yeah, most of my musically inclined friends who can hear more nuances tend to not be fans of mainstream music. Makes me glad I can't, I guess - gives me more stuff to listen to. I tend to get more character themes from more mainstream songs, but better general inspiration/emotional evocation for art from folk music, instrumental soundtracks and metal.

I wouldn't play FFX-2 again; I was glad to get the good ending with Tidus returning, but now I can go on YouTube to rewatch that scene if I want. FFX and FFIX I'd revisit for nostalgia. FFVII... Maybe. Dunno. I liked it okay, but I personally think it's overrated. FFVIII I never got to finish because my brother lost the discs to it.

I just became certified as a nursing assistant and we need CNA's around here wicked bad, and I'm willing to work 3rds which many aren't (hell I'm always awake during those hours so why not?) so I think that's why I was able to finally get something lined up. I was working on an AFA (then was planning on xferring to a university to get at least a BFA if not a Master's) with a concentration in Creative Writing but the college's financial aid department so totally screwed me over in a very painful way and I basically flipped them the mental finger as I left.

And it's not that my musical inclinations keep me from listening to mainstream, it's more that I find I like the lyrics and the stories from the not so mainstream stuff better. Believe me, I have a ton of mainstream music on my iTunes (Breaking Benjamin and Linkin Park being two of my favorites), I just like listening to bands that others might not have heard of or just might not be as widely known. Another reason is because for some reason my room doesn't get a good signal for the local rock station (and the way the pop station plays the same songs over and over again annoys me to no end) and while I know I could stream from the station's website, their web player doesn't list the songs played so if I like something, I don't know who the artist is.

Even in a good economy, the art field (especially illustration and design, which I do) are highly competitive. In a bad economy... It's just insane. While I would prefer an art-related job, I'm not limiting myself to them in my search. Last job I had was seasonal retail work over the holidays.

I just like music - I tend to stumble upon stuff or friends share stuff they've found. If it's mainstream, cool. If it's not, cool. Heck, I've had songs I've loved that I didn't discover were mainstream for years. I don't pay much attention to current pop culture trends. My nearly 60-year-old parents are probably more in touch with current pop culture than I am.

I don't listen to the radio, period. So that's not an issue for me. It's not for a lack of good stations or reception - what music I want to hear at any given moment is very dependent on my mood or muse, often specific enough to only certain songs. Since I can't control what's played on the radio, I just listen to iTunes, YouTube, CDs, etc. I mostly find new music when friends/family link me stuff or I randomly stumble across something.

Dragonwyrd316 In reply to TheDalishRanger [2011-04-04 20:10:53 +0000 UTC]

You come across music the same way I do. I think it's the best way to find something you like.

And sadly, my 60+ year old parents are more in tune with pop culture than I am. My dad has CD's of bands that are current that I never knew he'd ever heard of before - mom listens to the local pop radio station when she's driving, especially when her and my sister are off doing stuff. Yet, here I am, when mom listens to the oldies station, and I can tell her what the song is that's playing within the first few bars of the tune.

TheDalishRanger In reply to Dragonwyrd316 [2011-04-04 20:22:31 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I love stumbling across something new, but I feel like listening to radio stations can force music on me I might not want to hear.

My father can still name old pop/rock songs within a few bars, as well as the band name. He listens to the radio, but it's usually a comedy station or talk radio. My mother's like me - she listens to CDs and doesn't like using the radio. But she watches shows like Regis & Kelly or Ellen, so there's where a lot of her pop culture knowledge comes from.

I don't have anything against popular mainstream culture; I just don't bother to follow it. If I stumble across something from it that I enjoy, awesome! If not, that's okay too. xD I like what I like because I like it, simple as that. Music and otherwise.

This was inspired by the song played in the comic; Isabela's writer suggested it as a theme song and I couldn't get the mental image out of my head. I like Queen waaay more than I like Kesha, but that's not where the idea came from.

It's a great song; I love Queen. I in fact normally hate songs like TiK ToK, it's just that Isabela's writer linked it as a gag theme and that's where the original idea for this comic came from.
