Description
Gear was originally just a doodled head on a sheet of sketches for an art class. It was a one-eyed robot with a gear sticking out of its head, and I immediately called it "GearBox". I scribbled the name down as well because my mind kept wanting to change it to "GearHead". I drew the head a few more times, then forgot all about him for several months.

Moths later I was playing with a calculator in Biology class by holding my finger over the solar panel and making the display go dark. I thought of how this was similar to "killing" the display, and then I began thinking of solar powered robots. I remembered the "GearBox" in my sketchbook, and drew it full bodied. This is the design that's up there.

His story began developing around that time, and it went through a few different possible directions. One of those included a pair of kids giving Gear an aviator's hat. A short time later we had the Gear that I draw now .

So yeah, Gear's always been a tall, pale, one-eyed mechanic with a gear sticking out of his head.

I chose to use Gear because his design has changed the most radically since creation. For everyone else the changes are more slight and have more to do with my evolving style then actual development.

XDD I think this is one of the few character designs that actually got less cool during its evolution.
