"Sonic."
A soft whisper accompanied with a gentle smile came as he passed the door, just like he did every day. Soft footsteps near the bed as he sat, watching the one who kept on fighting. He heard what the doctors whispered under their breaths about the other's condition. It was a miracle if the other was awake, speaking. Logically, he should have returned into a coma or simply died. Poisoned, poisoned beyond even his powerful capabilities. Yet, here he was, proving the whole world wrong again.

"You know what they say about you?"
A nod. "I heard." A soft chuckle. "Guess they haven't seen everything about me."

Green eyes watch the heavy breathing he does, knowing that it's been like that since he's been awake. Fully conscious breathing, he was sure of it.
"Any improvements? It's been a year, now."
A shake of the head, making tears threaten to fall out of his eyes. No results, no progress, no anything. Shadow was barely hanging on, and smiling all the while to make it seem like everything was alright.

He lifted from his chair, taking the gloveless hand that lay there while remembering his words. He had asked for Shadow to stay, to keep on fighting even though the situation was hopeless. He knew what he had done and the reason behind it. He was being selfish. He didn't want to let go, certainly when he had discovered that Shadow still cared, cared for him more than he would ever say. And the other had allowed it. He had accepted his selfish request and, even he had not spoken the words, he was sure that Shadow was doing this for him.

"I'm sure next year..."
"No."
"What?"
He could barely hold the tears back. He had already known that it was completely hopeless, but he hadn't wanted to face it. And, after a year, it only made the situation even clearer. He had to stop. He had to let Shadow go. This was not a way to live, even for the Ultimate Life Form.

"You told me before. You don't know when you'll fall unconscious again, and I can't... I can't let you live like this. I'm being selfish," he stated, biting his lip. He had to. Even though it would probably destroy him beyond repair, he had to. It wasn't a choice, not when it meant playing with life or death.

"If-If you feel like you can't hang on, Shadow, let go. If you feel like it's too much and you know that the situation won't change no matter how much time passes, let go. I can take care of myself. Go join her. I'm sure she's waiting for you. I'll come join you when I'm done here. Promise."

Shock was written across dark features before a smile softened them, red eyes going hazy with tears. A streaked hand reached for a cheek and gentle words were whispered.
"I'm sorry. Sorry for making you cry."
"Go. Maria's waiting for you."

The smile didn't fade as the machine slowly flat-lined. A curtain of white coats raced in and Sonic held them back as Shadow exhaled one last time. He had to go. Time had come for him last year, but he had been so selfishly stubborn. A gloved hand slowly closed barely opened lids as a sob was choked back.

"He's better now."

Green eyes blinked as he watched the rain fall on his head, barely noticing how cliché the situation was. He was gone. Shadow was gone and would never return this time.

"Sonic?"
He looked in front of him, smiling as his best friend reached him, worry dominant on the young one's features.
"Sonic. You okay?"
"I let him go."

He felt the tears well up in his eyes, threatening to fall. He wasn't sure what was worse, the painful wait of one year until Shadow had finally woken up, or the pain of truly losing him.
"Sonic?"
"Shadow's gone. I let him go."

He fell to his knees, unable to hold the burning tears much longer. Footsteps rushed to him and he felt arms wet from the rain surrounding him in a warm embrace.
"It's okay, Sonic. It's alright."

He shouted, hating those words. It wasn't okay. It wasn't alright. He had been selfish throughout the year that Shadow had been conscious, unable to let go. The pain of that greedy action was consuming him, and the selfless action did nothing to help. Either way, the black hedgehog was irretrievable. He had lost him, lost him because of a stupid reason.
