Admiral Ackbar is my favorite of the alien leaders of the Rebel Alliance-turned-New Republic in Star Wars. He's a cunning tactician and a fleet commander. He made a reappearance in a later Star Wars novel from last decade entitled The New Jedi Order: Destiny's Way by Walter Jon Williams, where he came out of retirement to help defeat the Yuuzhan Vong in a stunning battle. It wasn't the final novel; that was The Unifying Force by James Luceno. I think I already did Ackbar in one of my previous fan arts, along with Yoda and Nien Nunb, the latter of which also first appeared in Return of the Jedi. Nien Nunb was the alien with the large ears who acted as Lando's copilot.

I thought he was a great character, I remember seeing him for the first time and how great it was that a non-human was in a command position.

I agree. I heard Ackbar was once an alien slave to the late Tarkin, who commanded the first Death Star and was blown up onboard when it was destroyed.
