Description A new year and new studies! This time it's a study on Microraptor Gui, another one of my personal favorites. Muscles done in markers, white pens, and colored pencils. Labels done in Illustrator.

Hi there! I think you've done a great job with this! I can't really give a critique on the anatomy, since I don't know anything about that, so I'm sorry if that is the kind of feedback you wanted. I can, however, talk about the artistic choices and offer a few suggestions in that respect!

First of all, I really love the texture of the muscle fibers! I also think that you've done a great job with the lighting. The piece is both clear (so scientifically useful) and also beautiful as a piece of art. Nicely done!

My criticism is that because of the light color of the lines that you uses to draw labels, I can't tell where some of them are pointing when they go over light regions of the raptor (for example, I find it hard to see where the lines around the jaw and neck terminate). I know you don't want the lines to be too dark/bright so as to be intrusive, but I think this could be avoided by making the lines brighter only where they need to be in order to stand out from the background--you might even be able to accomplish this with some sort of filter in Illustrator so that the line gets lighter or darker according to the brightness of the layer beneath it (I don't have Photoshop or Illustrator anymore, so I'm sorry that I can't be more specific about this). It might also be nice if you included a thumbnail of the raptor with feathers and skin in the lower right corner, so that viewers can connect the muscles and skeleton to what it would have looked like in life.

Overall, I find this piece both aesthetically appealing and intellectually interesting, and I love it a lot. Thanks for posting it!
