Description OUTDATED
Here is an updated version!

---------------------------

Thought I would just get this out of my fuckin brain once and for all...god why do I have to put myself through this type of art...why couldnt I decide to draw a proper picture with a BACKGROUND and may be even a fully illustrated bloody character. No. I draw sideviews. Nothing interesting. And next week I will be angry at this because I will see all the faults. Well, I already see loads of faults... and I drew it yesterday.

Why cant I just...not give a damn about anatomy

Took me all my free time on Sunday night to write all that bloody text. Please, tell me if there are any typos, there will be many.

And also, remember dragon anatomy is down to OPINION.
Dont become all bitchy with me if you dont like to draw dragons this way or think you know best...no one knows best when it comes to dragons. I do it myself, but try not to. (although when people draw wings coming out straight above the front legs that does piss me off XD)

if you are interested in what I referenced the anatomy from, I combined canine, avian, kangaroo and horse so its a bit mary-sueish I'm afraid...no creativity here.

last thing. I DID NOT use ANY other dragon anatomy tutorials, ref sheets or standalones in the making of this. ALL anatomy here is from my own research.

Er?! I thought I have commented on this one?D: Hm, maybe I commented on my phone, which loves to eat such kind of texts.
Anyway, I cannot say this often enough because you do not give me the ability to breath between two of your submitted picturesXD With every new picture you avoid a mistake you have done in the previous. I honestly cannot see anything I have to criticize, not even yet, now, that I write the comment a second timexD I love the smoth shading you did with pencil and your anatomical knowledge is impressive! its truly something young artists will search after in the internet when they search for dragon anatomy. I really have never seen such a beautiful reference of a normal dragon By the way, have you referenced the shoulder part from a canines anatomy?:3

ahaha XD its funny that you should comment on this one now, because I am actually updating this one very soon! Oh i can see many mistakes in this one! The back slopes too much, the wing arm anatomy doesnt add up and the two back legs are unproportionate...It looks okay here, although when you outline it and see just the lines you would be able to see how wrong it is! Yea, back when I drew this I liked to combine loads of different anatomy to draw dragons, so I mainly used canine and avian, although my tastes have changed slightly and I now prefer to stick to one family of species to use the anatomy from (which will be my next muscle sideview!)
Oh thanks! I was really happy on how the shading turned out! Hopefully my next picture will turn out just as smooth ^^

Daes newest digital picture has not reiceived their comment either:/ I just hate that. Well, if this one isnΒ΄t good enough for you then IΒ΄m curious how the update will look like:3

Omg ! I'm very much impressed ! That's one of the great ideas I've ever seen ! So realistic. We could believe that you already met a dragon ! Brillant, really.

Wow, this is.. WOW!! I'm very much impressed OwO
You've done a great job! I totally adore this kind of dragon anatomy. It's almost exactly what I'm using for my own dragons. I must say this muscle structure is really helpful for me, makes me understand a few things better now. Thanks for that! I need to show this piece around to some friends.

Btw I need to show you some sketches of a dragon species I'm creating right now
I would like to hear your opinion about it^^

Wing arms from the back, you haven't changed it much xD I know, I know *I'm shutting up*
You made the tail shorter, hmm...
But your idea is very good, considering that dragons don't exist. Somehow this one looks like a pet for me which I'd never mind to have
I like the neck the most.

Sezaii In reply to RusCSI [2012-04-23 17:32:27 +0000 UTC]

YES!!. it is not actually on the top of the back as it appears, if I were to remove the large pectoral muscles away the wing bone would actually join just after the front legs, but the pecs have to wrap arount the middle of the humerus bone, making it look like its coming from the middle of the back XD
You draw tails very short yourself and I think it looks fine ^^ But also remember I havent included any tail fan which would extend the tail by at least two feet.
You like the neck? XD Thats the part that is probably the most un-accurate...but thanks anyway XD

Holy cow, that's pretty impressive... if a biology textbook on dragons was ever to be written, I hope you'd be a contributing author. It seems like you're pretty frustrated with the whole thing though, as if you're stuck on doing these for the sake of improving your art, but you're sick of the disappointment in it the morning after. :/
I like how you've given the wing 'arms' plenty of bulky muscle to propel and hold the dragon in the air, instead of stick-like things. XD That muscle across its belly and sides (the 'PecThu' muscle) looks interesting, I've never seen a large, expansive muscle like it... I guess it contributes to the wing motion, and preventing the base of the wing arm from being ripped off? I see it has a streamlined head, good for cutting through the wind. :3 I admire how much effort you put into this!

Thanks! Well i have a big drive to draw things like this all the time but it really gets my artistic skill nowhere other than drawing sideviews for refs a little better. Really I need to be practicing painting techniques and drawing BGs as I am not great at that. So I just fill my gallery full of useless OC sheets and anatomy studies and never actually put them into practice on any proper painting.

All of that that you mentioned is avian anatomy, if you look at a bird wing skeleton you will notice that the radius and ulna are generally very wide apart, and the muscle structure is very large there too. Those PecTho muscles are the main breast muscles a bird also has. Take them away a bird never be able to even flap their wings properly. I always draw my own flying dragon Ocs with these muscles, many highly admired artists such as ~Humingbird and =skysealer do too and I believe its the only way a dragon could possibly fly. All animals have these muscles its just on ALL flying animals they are enlarged. :3
