Nobody was quite sure where Diego's new friend Ginny came from, but she seemed to have a positive influence on the wizard. Instead of wallowing at the bottom of a bottle over his lost family honour or his fiancee's departure, he took to working again. He expelled the rats from a new building-site, watercasted living-statues for the town-gala, and exorcised the poltergeist pervert that kept harassing the local women's sports club.

In short time Ginny struck off her on own despite having nobody's word except that of a burnt-out wizard. She could have been written off as a pretty face, until she let slip her fluent tongue in the Kobold, Imp, and Goblin languages. So she became an office-translator and intermediary for the less-represented races in Hume society.

Diego cleaned up and wised up for his sake and for her's. He got comfortable being around Ginny knowing she lived just fine outside his social sphere. On their free time they would meet in public, Ginny would hook her arm in his, and she'd talk non-stop about her week as they walked. Diego mostly nodded along, happy to listen. The one matter left unspoken was whatever happened to that kobold who used to tag behind him.

The ring was an accident. When he was cleaning out his family home Ginny came to visit, and she spotted it hidden among the trash destined for the furnace. She took a liking to it and it found a home on her finger. Diego winced at that but let it slide. His ex-fiancee had returned it to him at what felt like a lifetime ago, but seeing as Ginny had never owned jewellery before it seemed appropriate to gift.

It was uncertain where life was heading, but it was a damn sight more interesting if that cheerful woman with the pink hair was a part of it.
