---Hm. Inspired me to write---
The man came to a halt in front of the woman he had been sent to kill. His face was calm, for he was at peace with the gods. Her face twisted in a snarl, revealing the evil that was hatred in her heart. A lesser man would have been afraid of this woman, for she was perhaps the most powerful arcanist the world had known. Many had met their deaths believing they could slay her.
Yet this man did not know fear. He was at peace with the gods.
She spoke. "Paladin, broken one." Disdain dripped from her words, for she believed him less than herself. Less than any mortal perhaps.
It did not matter to him. "You wield magic not of the gods. Repent, so that you may live this night."
Her laugh was genuine. "Repent? Magic is not evil, Paladin. If there is evil in this place than it is what the gods have done to you. You do not feel fear. You do not feel hatred. You feel -nothing-. The gods took that from you when you agreed to be their puppet."
The man frowned in apparent disappointment. "I had hoped you would repent."
She smiled showing teeth. "And become as empty of emotion as you are, with only belief to sustain me? No. I embrace my emotions and the magic not touched by your gods! FEEL MY POWER!"
She rushed forward, calling on her power. The paladin danced back, bringing forth the power of his gods.
The battle was joined.

Now for those of you who feel like deeply analyzing things, which of them is the greater monster?

Well, my analysis quickly stopped when I realised that your conclusion, on the data given, would reveal more about you than about the morality or otherwise of the protagonists.

Actually what this stemmed from was a conversation that a friend and I had when looking at the Pathfinder Paladin class. At 3rd level they gain immunity to fear, magical or otherwise. We debated what would mean for a real person. What would a complete lack of fear do to our responses to dangerous situations?
Anyway, you bring up a valid point with the answer revealing more about personal opinions than facts.
Llama for you.
It was challenging to write in such a way that there was no truly 'correct' side of the conflict. I'm glad it came through.

Thanks for the explanation. I'd agree that a genuine lack of fear would change you, and arguably make you no longer human.

looks like one of these two will soon be bound in aetherial chains...
How does a mage cast spells when bound?
They can't.

Still Spell and Silent Spell. Or Subtle Spell, if you're in a later edition.
