Description
After all those covers I created in past few months, I came to an idea to create something that will be useful for a long period, and not just for few months, or year.As all of you probably know, release cycle for most Linux distributions is quite short, so it's not that practical to change CD/DVD covers, or whatever package that is labelled with concrete disto version, every few months.
So I thought it would be nice to do something "universal", for a long period packaging of your favourite Linux OS. The idea is to create covers that will not include concrete version numbers (10.04, 10.10 for Ubuntu, 13, 14 for fedora, and so on...), but only some general, universal info about that specific distro.
So here is the first cover of that kind, and ofcourse the first one is made for Ubuntu.
This, ofcourse, doesn't mean that I will stop creating covers for concrete distro versions, but I think many people will appreciate this approach too.
As always, download it, print it, and enjoy!

Love the colors and the use of flat graphics (I'm so over the drop-shadow/glossy/faux-texture thing). Beautifully done.

I'm also a bit tired of all those effects. Artwork can be nice, and even nicer, when it's done in a simplistic way, and nicely composed.

Haha, my friend, I was wondering where are you till now...
Please tell me how does it look printed, cause I printed one copy for myself today, and I wasn't that satisfied. I guess it's something with the cannon machine in a print shop where I'm printing my covers, or it is just due to RGB / CMYK color difference, cause I'm doing my covers in RGB color mode.
Somehow this warm gray background looks too dark compared to how it looks on screen. It's almost brown on my printed version. :/
I think I will do v2 of this cover, with a bit lighter background.

You're only problem is that you claim Linux is an operating system, which it's not. It's a kernel project.
Drop the penguin, release the sources and license as creative commons free culture license and this would make a great ubuntu dvd cover.

And what are your suggestions actually? To drop the sticker from cover completely, or to fill it with something else. As far as I know open source software doesn't have any official logo, so I don't know what could represent open source more than TUX do (even I know it's just a linux kernel logo).

No logo?
Open Source Green Circle: [link]
Free Software Gnu Logo: [link]
FOSS/FLOSS Logo: [link]
And for the OS you've got the FreeDesktop standards (which is basically what seperates Android/Meego etc from Ubuntu/Debian/Fedora etc):

That also has a logo, which I think it kinda cool if you set it in one of your squares.

Ok, to be honest, I'm not that familiar with those logos, except the GNU Logo. And to be honest once more, they look so simple/lifeless/ugly compared to TUX logo. And I guess that to many people those logos won't represent anything. I don't see nothing THAT wrong in putting Linux related iconography on an Ubuntu cover, cause Ubuntu IS actually Linux, and Ubuntu IS the most popular and the best represent of Linux today. And as I wanted to make a kind of "universal" Ubuntu cover, I wanted to make some mix of Ubuntu/Linux visual identity, and if TUX and the Gnome logo are not relevant and familiar and friendly, I don't know what is. People should not take this little sticker that seriously, cause I just wanted to play a little bit with this cute penguin.
Thanks for suggestions my bro, but I think I will keep the TUX, maybe with "powered by linux kernel" surrounding text.

Sure, play away. But just so you know, Ubuntu is not Linux. Ubuntu contains a Linux kernel as one part of a very large platform. It's not a linux platform, it's a whole. In all 'Linux' is so much of a lie that it's practically a myth.
Anyway, your choice I guess.

I know it's not Linux. But it's most popular distro based on Linux kernel, whether someone will like it, or not. And there is a lot connection between Linux and Ubuntu (no matter real or symbolic or phylosophic), that many people almost equals those two names. There is a lot to discuss about Ubuntu or Linux detalis, but it's for another forum. It's not for an art community site.
All in all, I don't see anything wrong with putting Linux/Gnome iconography on an Ubuntu related artwork, cause Ubuntu is, and probably always will be, the most recognised Linux based OSs.
Cheers.

I actually didn't wanted to represent open source "philosophy" or anything "official" with this penguin sticker. I just played a little bit with visual identity of Linux, and open source. And ofcourse I know Linux itself is not an operating system. But in all OS related topics it's reffered as an operating system. It's always linux vs Win, Linux vs MacOS, etc... Even the Ubuntu official tagline says "linux for human beings", so any average person will see it as a version of "Linux Operating system". I can drop it from cover, it's not a problem, if it's that wrong.

That's a great idea !
It would be very useful with a LightScribe CD-RW, so when a distro releases you only have to re-burn it with current version.
(unfortunately I have LightScribe CD-R only...)

Well my main intention was to create a DVD cover that will last for long time, but with CD/DVD labels it's not that easy. You must change DVDs every few months when new release is out, but I think it's not some big problem. Print those labels in more than few copies, and just stick them every few months on a freshly burned CD/DVD, with actual release.
