Description
"So this is how we're leaving this world", Nussbaum sighed, "Engulfed in all-out civil war."
"Did we have a choice?", Metlesits looked at him, half-smiling.
"I don't mind it, don't get me wrong, Skip. The way the Stratosians are treating the Troglytes..."
"But something's still bothering you."
"It's just... permission to speak freely."
Metlesits looked at him puzzled. Nussbaum was his friend almost from day one at the Academy. If there was one person this side of Heaven who could speak their mind without asking for permission, it was him.
"Granted", it was all the Captain could say.
"It's just I could've never fathomed you caring for an alien race this much."
"Oh...", David merely shrugged his shoulders, "It's weird, huh? We were First Fleet just a couple of months ago. Now, we're Starfleet. I guess something of that is rubbing onto me."
"I think I like this new you, Skip."
"Maybe we need to re-evaluate some principles that guide us, Vasya. For the Andorians, my people on Elizabethtown were the aliens. And they still came and helped us. And are my people that different from those down on Ardana?"
"Like I said, I like this new you.", Nussbaum said with a smile, holding up a data pad, "But if Frisco will stick a broom up your Jeffires tube for, I quote, losing forty-seven Type-3 phaser rifles under unspecified circumstances, end quote, I'll deny ever knowing you."
They both burst out in laughter.
"Starfleet protocol allows the loss of ten percent of shipboard material in case of a military engagement", David said, "Regardless of her re-classification, the Polaris is a battleship. Correct me if I'm wrong, we still have twenty-three Type-3's, two hundred Type-2's, and God knows how many Type1's, as well as a full complement of photon torpedoes, I guess we're well within the limit."
"They will find out you gave 'em to the Troglytes."
"And by the time they can prove it, the Troglytes've won the war and be a free people. And if the Frisco bozoes're coming after me... well, good luck, butterfly catchers!"

Beautiful render for a beautiful ship!Β
Well if it ever came to a point of the Polaris vs Enterprise my money is on the USS Polaris because as Mark Twain once said "It's not the sizeΒ of theΒ dogΒ in theΒ fight, it's theΒ sizeΒ of theΒ fightΒ in theΒ dog" and the Polaris has plenty of that.Β

To be honest, the Enterprise would win. Given equal circumstances, such as giving both crews a Saladin each to duke it out, the Polaris crew would win, because of one single factor: the UEFF does include anti-Starfleet training. Stemming from an age of paranoia during the time Metlesits and his peers were at the Academy, they had to learn how to fight Starfleet in a potential event of "hostile alien takeover" of Earth. UEFF code includes a scenario called Raise the Dawn, a code-reply one must give to the phrase Toll the bells. Only a certain number of hand-picked Captains and Admirals know of this, but they are takes with carrying out the "liberation" of Earth if things go South.

Always happy to see the old girl! Love to see the Polaris against the Enterprise in a wargames scenario.

I was thinking quite a lot about how the Polaris would fare against the Enterprise. I have to admit, the Enterprise would probably make mincemeat out of the Polaris. The Enterprise is far better armed, and has overall better scanners. The Polaris is much more manouverable, and has better tactical systems, but not so advanced scanners and has fewer weapons than the Enterprise. The Polaris has one major advantage, and it's Vasya Nussbaum, who is probably the best marksman of the Federation, far better than Chekov and Sulu.
