I always get a charge out of seeing these ships, straight out of the Franz Joseph Starfleet Technical Manual, from back in the 20th Century!

I've never known how to feel about single-nacelled ships. But you do them justice. I wonder since they have a single warp engine, if the warp core would be more compact.

Yeah, they weren't meant to be long-distance ships, like the Constitution class. Hit fast, hit hard is the concept here.

A Starfleet scout responds to a distress call from a federation freighter, warping in they see they are too late as the assailants have made off with the precious cargo of dilithium crystals, the freighter has half a warp nacelle missing and fires on decks 5,6 & 7 on the port side of the saucer section, fire suppression systems off line after the attack

I smell the work of the Orion Syndicate. Piracy is their stock in trade and they were pretty much toe-to-toe with the Federation in the mid-22nd Century, even ahead in some ways.
