Description
You guys knew I'll be doing this, am I right?Okay, let's get a couple of things straight: You know I'm a TOS purist and I'd pay real money to see the unadulterated 1701 in Discovery. I also know it won't happen. Audience these days wants an Enterprise designed by an art student, not an aircraft engineer.
Does this mean I dislike this incarnation of the Enterprise? Abso-friggin-lutely NO! I like this update, I think it's the third best Enterprise after the real deal and the refit. It took elements of both of these, with even hints of the Franz Joseph interpretation. This is a 1701 I could imagine being refitted after the Five-Year Mission and still remaining the same ship.
It took me a week to build this beauty. I had to balance my free time and stretch it to unhealthy levels. Yeah, I'm over thirty, the lack of sleep does take its toll. Who cares, I managed to build this thing. I was lucky to wait till a top shot of the filming model appeared, so I didn't have to rebuild my model, like I'm sure all of those who were all too impatient are doing now. Also, I used a lot of color and contrast corrected screencaps, stretching the old Mk. I Eyeball to its utmost limits, to find details others have missed: the phasers on the very bottom of the lower saucer, the same position the TOS Enterprise fired its blue beams from. The dual inset circular photorp launchers. Bits and pieces, and I still think I'll have to revotk it once more data becomes available. Then again, I am firmly of the opinion that as of the publishing of this image, my model is the most accurate apart from the original TV CGI model, of course.
I will release this model, just give me some time to rest. Building it took out my dilithium matrix and my inner Scotty is screaming about his poor bairns
Model by me

...I just realized that "Discoprise" was a reference to the actual series' name, "Discovery," and not some sort of lighthearted nickname/pun dealing with all the twinkly disco-ball-like lights on this thing. Man do I feel stupid!

I don't mind the redesign. The original will always be the best.
But you did a great job at recreating the Discoprise, and it's a far more elegant update than the Church design. Great work.

Indeed. This is a good redesign. The only thing I'd change is it having the TOS style pylons, not the TMP ones. And maybe the Bussard spikes (see my polaris for those).

I don't think Trek will do much for canon purists. Discovery is very clearly a visual reboot, more than 50% another universe, but I'm perfectly fine re-treading those old stories with new content. The Transformers universe does this all the time, I like more possibilities out of my Star Trek.
You'll probably hate this, but the Discovery Enterprise has an excelsior-like flat impulse deck. The top was revealed on an eaglemoss poster. www.trekbbs.com/threads/discovβ¦

For me, Discovery is still in the "Kelvin" line.
If we take a trip in time and reach Kirk ten years ahead, we will not find the canon.
The canon is:
The Past founded in Deep Space Nine, where the little hairy balls infest the Enterprise.

In the midst of all this, just your work to give me the sense of peace.
A beautiful job, DΓ vid!

Prime Discovery and Kelvin Timeline take place at the exact same time -- the mid-2250s -- whereas Prime TOS takes place in the late 2260s. All the main action in the Kelvin Timeline films take place over a decade before Prime TOS, which is why the characters are younger (JT Kirk a captain in his 20s instead of 30s).
1) Visual reboots are a fact of life in Star Trek since 1966, when the aired TOS pilot was a conscious visual reboot of The Cage, The Menagerie cleverly retconned it as indicating a 10 year gap. TMP was a huge visual reboot of TOS, and TWoK rebooted TMP! None of these reboots ever bothered me before; in fact, I love Trek's visual variety. Furthermore, there has been a legal official alternative Trek continuity since 1979 when TMP diverged from all previous post-TOS media, including TAS, novels, comics, tech manuals, and games. All of these were consolidated into Star Fleet Universe, which legally exists to this day as an official Trek alternate reality where TAS, FASA RPG content, Franz Joseph's original tech manual, and the early TOS novels and comics, are all canon. Star Fleet Universe has a completely different history of the Federation and a completely different future and aftermath of TOS's 5-year mission. The Kelvin Timeline is, in fact, the second official alternate timeline. [Also, see #3]
2) TOS showed numerous Federation officials and former captains, such as Garth, wearing ostensibly older or concurrent dark blue Starfleet uniforms with gold trim, extremely similar to the Discovery uniforms. Moreover, it is unreasonable to consider improvements in SFX technology as contrary to canon. TOS already got a special edition with new CGI updates, and may one-day receive a more extensive update like the following, which is super brilliant BRILLIANT work by Kevin George: www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCPdmOβ¦
3) It is solid canon since at least the TNG episode 'Parallels' that there are infinite parallel universes, not just Prime and Kelvin and SFU, and these are generally indicated on-screen by both very slight and quite major visual differences between them. In other words, Star Trek's canon is literally that there is no canon, no prime, because there are infinite parallel timelines and realities, and we are watching adventures where, ultimately, Starfleet is discovering this fact! The entire plot of Discovery so far is about nothing other than the discovery of infinite universes via the Mycelial Network (to say nothing of Mudd's time machine). This WILL tie into every other parallel world encountered in the history of Star Trek because *the concept of parallel worlds is the grand unifying overarching idea of the entire franchise*. It has been argued convincingly (mostly by old Star Fleet Universe fans!) that every visual reboot constitutes yet another parallel universe, and the same was said, for example, of Star Trek Generations, given that the nature of Nexus introduces myriad universes, and the slightly altered TNG combadges (plus Picard's uncharacteristic alteration of the prime timeline -- in which every TNG character was, in fact, killed by the destruction of Veridian III) were elements hitherto indicative of a parallel universe. I hold strongly to this opinion based on 'Parallels', and would furthermore regard First Contact and DS9 Season 5+ as indicating yet another timeline because of the huge unexplained-in-world visual reboot. This is supported by much on-screen evidence without any leaps of interpretation. For example, Picard's assimilation dream in the beginning of FC shows him wearing his original TNG uniform, and the Borg Queen's later statements about Picard/Locutus having become limited, "so three-dimensional", and further evidence of a huge number of alternate timelines and parallel universes depicted in Voyager, each containing a Borg Queen and Collective somehow aware of the other realities. The Borg Queen eventually says explicitly that Borg consciousness and will to assimilate extends beyond any one universe or timeline. I could go on with the Enterprise Temporal Cold War plot, but there is no need. In essence, Star Trek has become about exactly what Q said it was about in the TNG finale 'All Good Things': to explore the unknown possibilities of existence, and that Picard will "find out" what he means. I have no problem with any of this because these are all the elements, subtle suggestions, and loose threads, that will lead to a future epic about how to reconcile the timelines or how the Federation will face a foe beyond space and time. Tarantino could do this in a few years! I hope so. Who knows?
4) Captain's Log Supplemental: Discovery is great! I loved season 1. I love the aesthetic, the stories, the characters.... I am a lifelong TOS fanboy, and I have nothing but praise for Disco, and, to me, it does capture much the same atmosphere of TOS when it was at its most serious (the darkness of The Cage, the sadness of The Menagerie, the stakes of Balance of Terror, and so on). I respectfully disagree with those who say it does not feel like Star Trek. It feels just like "prime" Trek always felt to me.
That being said, Star Trek Continues is even better. Entire series blew my mind, and that finale was the stuff of legend.
5) You're a tremendous artist, David. Your works have brought so much joy to so many people. Gorgeous sense of cinematic scope and drama framing these majestic starships. Thank you!

Looked like something I designed
Wish THIS was in the film instead of...the one with the comedy breast engines and wishbone pylons.
I saw this but I feel it is an attempt by the Powers to try and make more people invest in a series that has had a serious mauling by many.
"Audience these days wants an Enterprise designed by an art student, not an aircraft engineer."
Forgive me but I disagree - trust me, when people not of our generation see the designs of the past, most go "Why didn't they do these?!"
Classics are for a reason; those who design for art sake, are inconsiderate.
Well done though on this excellent work it is the third best - I agree - it has a lot I like - should bin the Discovery and concentrate on this beauty! After all, she is the Enterprise...
Excellent as always
