Description
You guys knew I'll be doing this, am I right?Okay, let's get a couple of things straight: You know I'm a TOS purist and I'd pay real money to see the unadulterated 1701 in Discovery. I also know it won't happen. Audience these days wants an Enterprise designed by an art student, not an aircraft engineer.
Does this mean I dislike this incarnation of the Enterprise? Abso-friggin-lutely NO! I like this update, I think it's the third best Enterprise after the real deal and the refit. It took elements of both of these, with even hints of the Franz Joseph interpretation. This is a 1701 I could imagine being refitted after the Five-Year Mission and still remaining the same ship.
It took me a week to build this beauty. I had to balance my free time and stretch it to unhealthy levels. Yeah, I'm over thirty, the lack of sleep does take its toll. Who cares, I managed to build this thing. I was lucky to wait till a top shot of the filming model appeared, so I didn't have to rebuild my model, like I'm sure all of those who were all too impatient are doing now. Also, I used a lot of color and contrast corrected screencaps, stretching the old Mk. I Eyeball to its utmost limits, to find details others have missed: the phasers on the very bottom of the lower saucer, the same position the TOS Enterprise fired its blue beams from. The dual inset circular photorp launchers. Bits and pieces, and I still think I'll have to revotk it once more data becomes available. Then again, I am firmly of the opinion that as of the publishing of this image, my model is the most accurate apart from the original TV CGI model, of course.
I will release this model, just give me some time to rest. Building it took out my dilithium matrix and my inner Scotty is screaming about his poor bairns
Model by me

Personally, I don't even want the story to be canon as the whole first season was pure garbage. They've done a lot more to hurt this franchise's canon than just update the visuals.

My favorite part about it is the producersβ methodology. This is intended to *be the original* but itβs the show that looks different.Β
It means they can make it look good enough to pass muster for modern audiences without actually changing anything.
And in the case of the Enterprise, they were able to give it this awesome overhaul. Great execution on the model!

I can understand upgrading the Enterprise to fit with the more detailed and futuristic look that Discovery gives us, after all it's a little difficult to take a show or movie seriously if you're too busy laughing at the effects.
After all, look at Superman's mustache.
Of all the things the Kelvin timeline taught me, one thing that stood out is which is more important, the look or the spirit?
When I look at this Enterprise, I too like the new design. Β And of course I do have my constructive criticism, who doesn't?Β Like I would prefer the neck to be taller and the nacelle pylons at a 45 degree angle, plus removing the lower fairings on the aft part of the nacelles -- and I don't mean the aft nacelle where life support is located -- but I like how they did the impulse drive where not only it makes more sense when it came to connecting the saucer and the neck with Jefferies tubes and turbolift tunnels.Β As well as the aft vents are closer to how the engines appeared before the final look of the Enterprise.
And many of us have already did our own version of the Enterprise, and we all have our own reasons why we did our Enterprises like that.
And with other aspects of Discovery, I also love how they made more futuristic looking equipment and weapons while at the same time honouring everything that was on the original.Β Even though they did a tonne of reassigning from the microphone/speaker on the communicator is now a touch screen to the power setting on the type 2 phaser is now a stun/kill indicator, big deal.Β I did a tonne of reassignments on my version of the Enterprise as well.Β But as long as the spirit was there.
In fact I dare to say the chances they took with Star Trek Discovery were not only more ballsy, but more honouring of the original Star Trek better than the Kelvin timeline.Β By the way having a brewery style engineering didn't bother me as it was a bit more realistic, especially with such things as fuel lines, ODN conduits, gas exchange, EPS conduits, etc.
Also could I see this Enterprise work on the Kelvin timeline or on -- say Star Trek Continues?Β Yes I can.

Freakin awesome. Great job putting this together, especially with so little information. Personally, I think they did this one pretty well. (Though I find I like the original a bit better also, minus some details) Just imagine if they had used this in the reboot films...

They have released images for the uniforms in a teaser video. Thankfully they look more like the ones in the original series with the classic blue and yellowish gold colors. We might also see the red uniforms as well even though they were not seen in the tos pilot episodes.

Any chance you could make a version in tos colors? I love the design but the darker colors of the discovery ships irritate me to be honest. Whats the point of beautiful ships if we cant properly see them? I'm not a 3d modeler so if it would be difficult or time consumeing i understand, but i would love to see this beauty in tos glory.

Making the grey lady grey again? Well, I used a procedural style texture, so changing the color would take a few minutes tops

Well in the calendar she's got a white hull. It's just the lighting in Discovery is going for a semi-realistic one sort of like what we see in parts of The Motion Picture.
Here she is fully lit.

When I saw this in Discovery, I was quite upset. It took me a day to calm down. And then I came up my own in-universe explanation for this new design. I'm pretty sure it doesn't hold any merit, though.
2245- USS Enterprise launched from San Francisco Yards. Captain Robert April commands her for a five-year mission.
2250- April is promoted to Commodore and Christopher Pike assumes command for his first five-year mission.
2254- Events of "The Cage".
2256-57- Klingon War breaks out. Enterprise undergoes a refit, which explains how she is seen at the end of "Will you Take My Hand?". Pike commands her for another five-year mission.
2262- Pike's second five-year mission concludes and he is promoted to Fleet Captain. Enterprise is refit again into how she will look in "Where No Man has Gone Before", at the beginning of James T. Kirk's five-year mission.

Incredible Job!!! Β Β Β
I will admit to being one of those naysayers concerning the show Star Trek Discovery before it came out and was happy to be proven wrong and actually love the show. Also, for me I am quite happy with this version on the Enterprise; I know they have made a few tweaks but it still feels like the Enterprise to me. I am also looking forward to the return of Discovery's second season because from what I understand weΒ may see hints at the classic uniforms fromΒ Star Trek: The Original SeriesΒ whenΒ Star Trek: Discovery.Β

Just like every other starship design in Discovery, it looks fantastic! I could see them in a setting far into the future. The problem is none of them fit the timeline. With such an established timeline for ships and technology, seeing these in the mid 23rd century is like seeing a WWII movie with all the battleships replaced with sleek modern day warships. The whole show feels like its trying to do right, but it doesnβt even understand its own fanbase and what they want to see.

This is the sad truth. The problem is that the CBS baboons won't accept that canon means visual canon as well. At least, this Enterprise redesign is a good one, unlike the Ryan Church abomination.

At least this incarnation doesn't make me want to kick the shit out of the designer like the JJ-prises did. It feels like an updated bleeding edge version of the original Jefferies design. Though I'm still very partial to the Mad Koi Fish design where an updated Enterprise is concerned. I have to agree though the Jefferies and the Refit are still the best Enterprises in my book, likely because I grew up with them.Β

Wow man!Β You got crazy 3D modelling Ninja skills!!!
I did breath something of a sigh of relief when I saw this in STD, properly balanced look, not the mishapen hood ornament of JJ-Trek.Β Also, I think I prefer it that Disco has it's own design look.Β I also wish people (both studio and fans) were honest about Disco - it's another reboot - and stop trying to shoehorn yet another design into the legacy as yet another refit of the Enterprise, enough is enough, at this rate there would never be any Star Trek episodes because as soon as they built one Enterprise it'd be time to refit it again... the poor gal'll never get out of space dock.Β

thefirstfleet In reply to celticarchie [2018-05-06 07:26:58 +0000 UTC]
To be honest, while I consider ENT as prime canon, they could split it off and add it to Disco, so we'd have three canons:
- TOS-TNG-DS9-VOY and the first 10 movies -- the Prime Canon
- ENT and DSC -- 21st century Trek
- The new movies -- the Kevlin timeline
π: 0 β©: 1
celticarchie In reply to thefirstfleet [2018-05-07 00:22:47 +0000 UTC]
The trouble is ENT follows the TOS-TNG-DS9-VOY ethos of being a 'science fiction' show, each show/film may push & stretch that concept and our individual acceptance of that may vary.
JJ-Trek and Disco-Trek are more along the lines of a 'space fantasy' it might seem like a trival distinction, but the result is transporters that can't beam you up when the ground falls out from your feet - even though you have begun to dematerialise, red goop makes planets explode, death is conquered by super blood and consequences from one film are never addressed in the next.Β I really enjoyed Star Trek Beyond but I'm under no illusion that any of the things that I enjoyed about it will be carried through into the next films.
As for Disco-Trek, for the most part it felt like I was watching a completely different Sci-Fi show and if it had been allowed to be a different show with no ties to Trek, it might have been good, but the constant reminding of that it's susposed to be Star Trek, through characters, props, music, aliens.Β I kept calling the Klingons the Playdough aliens because I kept forgetting they were supposed to be Klingons.
It's bascially this disconnect in style that doesn't make me enthusiastic to do the fan thing and figure out the continuty, as I'm about to articulate in another discussion I think it's time for fans to let go of the Canon, Paramount/CBS don't give it a second (or a first) thought.Β Maybe we should just be content with out own fan continuities.
