Description
- So, what did they say? - Nussbaum asked, while all the others listened just as eagerly as he did. Silence fell upon the bridge of the Polaris as Metlesits spoke:- Frisco, Leningrad and Lor'Vela found a common ground. They're not stopping at the colonies. We'll be guarding the flank of the Entente with Talla's ship.
The officers of the Polaris looked at eachother, realization finally hitting them.
- A Federation joined navy... all the way to the Kzinti homeworld? - Jiménez said, barely audible. It was something that seemed impossible only a few years ago. But not now. Not after Bleeding Cait. Not after the Iron Triangle and with Starfleet finally realizing the worth of the minor navies. Still, Jiménez, and perhaps most of those on the bridge thought Metlesits was exaggerating, or has misunderstood San Francisco's communiqué.
- So... Starfleet's going to war? - Nussbaum said - A real offensive war?
- That's right. - Metlesits nodded, his face dead serious - Komack says it'll be the largest fleet ever assembled since the Romulan War. Starfleet, the First Fleet and the Andorians. The massacre of Cait was just too much. We're going to Kzinhome.
What happened in the wake of his words was something he didn't expect: his crew, his friends erupted in cheering. Then again, they were all Humans, red-blooded Terrans, all of them plagued by the Kzinti in one way or another. And after all the pain and suffering of their generations and those before them, they'll be witnessing Humankind's ultimate answer to the Kzinti's cruelty. Man is bringing the fight to Cat country.
- Frisco says the Klingons are getting restless, so they think this'll be some good sword-rattling to scare them off. - Metlesits said after the cheers subsided - If this operation fails, the Federation will lose face. The Klingons'll definitely use our defeat to gain power. The Romulans might also exploit a Federation loss. So the Federation'll be throwing everything they have at the Cats. The Kzinti know this, so even as we talk here, they're re-deploying all their forces to the homeworld.
- They'll allow us to reach Kzinhome without putting up a fight? - Ainsworth asked in disbelief.
- After what we did at Elizabethtown? The Cats know they can't protect every chunk of rock they cling to. It might lengthen the war, but in the end, it'd leave to most of their resouces already destroyed and Kzinhome basically defenceless.
- One last stand, huh? - Big Chief White Eagle grumbled - The whole Cat fleet versus whatever we and Andor and Frisco can crank out? Boy, that'll be fun...
- One last stand. - Metlesits nodded - And we'll be there from the start. Sitek's leading the first joint task force with the Entente, and, of course, wherever he goes, trouble is brewing.
- And what do the bigheads forecast? - Nussbaum said.
- No numbers are known as of yet. - the Captain said - But Leningrad says it won't be a stroll down the park. It'll be all or nothing. The Cats will put up a big fight, we all know that... but whichever deity they pray to help them... 'cause Doomsday's coming.

But of course. The Kzinti War was always meant to be an excercise of sorts by the Frisco bigheads. Unlike we at the UEFF, they never took it seriously. Until they got their asses handed to them in the first act of the War. A few months later, whatever Starfleet could spare returned to Kzinhome to unleash hell...

Well, they probably thought that the Kzinti were just a second rate race; a nuisance, and so sent a suitably small fleet to deal with said nuisance. The Kzinti always got outsmarted or outgunned in the past, and any incidents with them ended with the furballs running away with their tails between their legs (or usually dead). And same thing went for any other race that challenged Starfleet. The Romulans: crushed. The Klingons: went home suitably castrated with their tail between their legs to lick their wounds, and they only managed to cause damage because they had more heavily armed cruisers than Starfleet at the beginning of the war.
Underestimating your opponent and hindsight is a bitch. Ignoring the UEFF's advice, which I'm sure they gave (and was then ignored), on the other hand, was just plain stupid.

Especially after the second War with the Cats. Even back then they used to have ships that outrun and outgunned the best the Federation had to offer. And this all continued with their newer designs. A Chiss class cruiser is more powerful than a pre-refit Constitution and as manouverable as a Pallada.

I was always under the impression that Starfleet had designs that were at least equal to their Kzinti counterparts. At the very least, the Federation had more resources, and hence could outnumber them if they couldn't outgun them ship-to-ship.

Only Starfleet gets the Connies, and given I originally joined the fleet to pay my college entering Starfleet and not the UESN didn't make sense.
Besides, we don't get in some of Starfleet's troubles. Heard that Enterprise stumbled on a Space Amoeba...
Better the Neutral Zone patrol. The Romulans may have the habit to try and fire a plasma torpedo on your face if you give them an excuse or think they can get away ith it, but at least it makes sense.

From a First Fleeter's point of view, no. Feds are Starfleet and related, the other fleets are Terran, Andorian, Vulcan, you name it.

United Earth First Fleet, Earth's own star navy. Founded in the wake of Starfleet's foundation on the conceps of the Romulan War era United Earth Stellar Navy, it became Humankind's own space military. Based in Leningrad, USSR, it has facilities throughout Earth, mostly in Eurasia. The First Fleet gave famous Captains to the Galaxy, including, but not limited to, Linus Randolph, Maria Boccioni and Uriah Noah.

How are they connected to Starfleet if at all?

thefirstfleet In reply to Transportphotos [2013-08-27 14:46:42 +0000 UTC]
In multiple ways:
- The chief of the First Fleet, a.k.a. the Branch Admiral has to report to the Fleet Admiral of Starfleet
- The fleets are obliged to assist eachother in missions. The treaty was later redifined, it gave the first Fleet more movement but also made it to participate in purely exploratory missions.
- Some ships and crews have found their was back and forth between the two fleets.
- Both originate from the outcome of the Romulan War
- Older starships are often passed for free from Starfleet to the First Fleet, who then repair and refit these ships.

Niiiice. I admit I still have a great affinity for this era's ships. I really wanted to see original series ships in the "new" ST movies, upgraded by modern FX. Instead, we got the hot-rod Enterprise with way too much glare on the bridge, for a decent workspace.
