Description

Lieutenant Bruce Surrey looked at the gauges before him with utter bewilderment. The lights illuminating the forward phaser control room blinked with the power drain that gripped the Enterprise. Someone on the bridge was firing everything the ship got on... something. Before the massive energy drain could cause a major system failure, Surrey quickly re-adjusted the phaser emitters' power grid on his control panel.

Surrey felt a chill he hadn't since the Romulan incursion incident. That day, he nearly lost his life, and he spent weeks in sickbay recovering from radiation burns. But as a Starfleet officer, he understood the risks of his job. The fear of death and injury didn't phase him. What sent shills down his spine that day was the last look he took of Robert Tomlinson, standing alone at the very console he now was manning. Bob Tomlinson died that day, going far above and beyond the call of duty. He was a comrade and a friend, and now, Bruce Surrey wished he were still there. Tomlinson had much more experience than him. Whatever the Enterprise was up against was something far beyond they've ever encountered. The ship needed the best of the best, at all posts, now. Surrey saw a warning signal light up on his console. The phaser banks' automated systems were requesting even more energy.

Ooh, yes. I just watched this episode last week. Poor Matt. The way Kirk reacted to him before his breakdown, and how he sounded in his log entries, makes me think before the Doomsday Machine he was a capable and competent commander. I do like the short story too from Bruce's POV.

I hope that if we ever get a Pike series, we'll see a Decker cameo.

Great moment from one of the best The episode is a timeless classic.

One thing always burned me though... why didn't they use Photon Torpedoes?

Well, given that even the explosion of a shuttlecraft flying directly into the maw did only minor damage to the DM...

Even at the highest yield, the photon torps would have had no effect.

Thank you very much!

I think the scriptwriters haven't invented photorps yet. Remember, even in Balance of Terror, they used "proximity charges"

Oh yes, very much - but in 'Arena', they did use a couple on the Gorn ship in orbit.

That said however and alas, thanks to Enterprise, photorps have been around for decades.

In truth we know why - SFX limits.

Looking now... it is a stupid question to raise...

Sorry for the time waste, sir.

Easiest explanation is that the torpedoes were rendered useless by the dampening field projected by the Doomsday Machine.

Every system on the EnterpriseΒ was already having to draw power much faster than they would have otherwise and the photon torpedo was likely affected in a similar way or their warheads were drained for fuel.

On top of that it's implied earlier on that the field causes antimatter to decay (the line about the antimatter being neutralized when the salvage team beams aboard the Constellation) so it may be that the antimatter portion of the warhead decayed to the point where it'd be useless.
