I really like the definition you give his underside, way better than the weird flat look that he got in the last scene of the film. And honestly, far more representative of the way actual crabs are put together. Same with his tail. Looks very much like an actual coconut crab's tail! 
And then there's his left eye that's just given up on focusing on anything, lol. Cake-drunk. XD
And pfft. He's not FAT.. he's just storing up for.. uh.. the winter. Or a molt. Yeah. That's the ticket. XD

Mhm, I never liked the look of his underbelly (or tail for that matter) in the movie, but from a 3D-modeler's and animator's point of view, I can understand the choices. I will keep experimenting with this design, though, since this was also a very rushed drawing that I didn't even plan to color. It's fun with hermit crabs, because as you say, their segments are so defined and almost look like human musculature. And the visible joints in the legs were inspired by my tarantulas, since you can clearly see them and I just went with it! Still, I don't want to alter too much, especially around his claws, as they look alot different than real coconut crab's and I don't want to deviate too much from his original design either. But I'll play around with it more, for sure.
Haha, yess, half of him already fainted XD He's in a cake coma! And I doubt he'd have the energy to molt for a while, haha! (Since they don't molt on their backs, like tarantulas usually do?) But yeah, he'll definetly be fine for winter, considering all that butter and fats used in the cake!
