Yeah, I might have went overboard with his squishy-face from the beginning. But that's what I find so enjoyable with him.. there are no rules, no strict muscular to think about when you draw. Just.. flexible, cartoony, round smoosh.

Well Yeah, the way I draw him makes it look like he's really soft and fat, just like you said. Squishy crab. I'm just having too much fun drawing him like that.

Since I've rewatched the movie and discored your drawings at the same time, I draw only this character! I had forgotten how much Tamatoa was hot!

I've touched crabs many times (used to fish for them as a kid) but they don't exactly have cartoon faces like Tamatoa does, haha!

Despite all my smooshy depictions of him, I imagine his skin to be fairly coarse and rough to the touch, not really as soft as a reptile's. But his whole "jaw-part" must be very flexible considering how wide he can open his mouth. (He doesn't really have a jaw anyway, haha.)

I meant to post this last night, but I was too exhausted and forgot...

After having handled naked hermit crab butts, I can confirm they are kinda soft and squishy.  Kinda like a caterpillar or a worm.  Not 'warm & fuzzy' soft, but still fairly soft.  Smooth in some areas, lightly pebbled/textured in others.  The skin on their abdomen is actually pretty thin and fragile, but my crabs are also very small.  Larger species like coconut crabs have tougher skin on their abdomen (but that is also because the abdomen is heavily calcified to protect it without using a borrowed shell like hermit crabs).

Soo... assuming that Lalotai coconut crab monsters have similar physiology to real pagurid crabs, I'd say your depiction is pretty spot on!

Oh yeah, coconut crab butts tails seem to be pretty spongy but with a tougher texture, just as you say. For some weird reason, I seem to draw his abdomen all segmented... I don't know why I do that. It just happens, ha!

I still imagine his face to be fairly rough, though! It has all these little lumps in it if you look closely. Still, a very flexible and smooshy face!
