This was them heading back to the forest across the river. They had just finished drinking their milk and eating browse.

Is that a daily routine for them?

This first group ranged from about 1 to 3 months old. The next group ranges from about 8 months to over a year old.

Poor kids.
How old must they grow before they're let loose to join a herd?
Actually, could the orphans form their own herd?

I think maybe around 8 - 10 years. That's when they are usually weened from their parents to live on their own. Well, for males anyway. Females usually stay together in large herds.
I think the people of the orphanage might already have that in plan for the babies themselves. Since they are already keeping them together in herd.

'Thought so. I'm sure a hierarchy of sorts would develop between them, like it does with litters of athletic dog breeds.
