Description
Gah... I took a lot longer than I should have on this.Okay. Description. Well, I decided I should get better at pencilling real life stuff, due to inspiration from several amazing dA Greats, the first that springs to mind being *nichol . If you haven't seen her stuff, I suggest you go now, her tutorial also helped me to draw that lip. I like that lip.
Sooo... I found a picture. Bloody low-res thing it was. Damnit. THEN I decided to use a4 paper and I thought "Oh, for an added challenge, lets ONLY USE AN HB PENCIL". Whatever.
STUPID BRAIN.
PS: Critique is accepted thankfully as long as it is constructive. Comments will always be replied to and favourites thanked!
EDIT; Thanks to some constructive criticism from ~geurge I'm resubmitting this with a plain background. I reckon it's a billion times better, so cheers!
EDIT NUMERO 2; Some lovely people on dA told me that this guy's Ruki from the Gazette. Why didn't I know that? I KNOW the Gazette. Gosh and darn it.
EDITO 3; Blimey. 136 comments, 57 favourites, 1500 views and counting! I'm bloody honoured, is all I can say. <3
EDIT FOUR: 151 comments, 89 favs and 2483 views. I have to say, this is astounding. Thank you all so much for taking the time to click and/or say lovely things! You're all beautiful. <3

pencil work is very pretty, though the proportion is kinda off to me, I know Ruki is wearing a really huge hat, but I still think head and hands are too small,... same problem I always face (maybe it's also the hat that's a bit too big?)
anyway, well done

Sexy picture is SEXY.
Yes, I'm incredibly obsessed with J-Rock in general, but the GazettE especially. I loved his costume in that picture <3
Very true, I don't think there is a moment or picture he's been in that isn't amazing.

Absolutely amazing... you're really really good with pencil! You have a really beautiful style, very real but with enough style to make it personal if that makes any sense? I don't know, First I was drawing and then I've been surfing for a few hours, my brain's pretty much lost any power of words right now... X[ I only wish I had lovely words left to describe how much I love this, but damn my brain is dead! All I have left is HOLYGODDAMNITYOU'REAMAZING.
wait a minute though...
my god I knew I'd seen this before!! Your exhibition, my GOD! I...you go to the same madhouse as I do!! xD xD My god... this is quite creepy. O.o
Now I've got that madness over with, your exhibition is amazing!! We oogled over it for quite a while instead of marking everyone elses like we were supposed to.
*favourites* Amazing work!!

Thank you very much indeedy for the lovely compliment and fav - it always makes my day when someone comments without using "lolcool". And no worries about the lack of brain function. That is the regular state for me, seeing as I do little with my time apart from draw, surf Da Inturrnetz, play video games or guitar, dream, drum and write stories, all of which being very stationary activities. God, I'm a lazy bum.
...
Right, that is well weird. How the hell did you find me? I didn't think I left any trace of myself behind. I THOUGHT I WAS BEING ALL SNEAKY.
So much for trying out for the Secret Service. D:
Haha, I remember doing the same last year, where Gleave'd give you like 4 marks to base your scoring on, then afterwards he wouldn't even tell you if you were anywhere near. Crazy days. Few tips for your exhibitions next year:
1) Use the wall, even though it specifically says not to.
2) Don't draw a line up the wall in masking tape like I did - use the SPECIAL tape, even if you have to steal it from the devil himself.
3) Mount in different colours if you want, even though the sheet says (again) not to. To be honest, no one cares in the slightest. And it makes it look pretty.
4) Don't stick embarrassing pictures of friends in your sketchpads, just in case they go to your exhibition without telling you.
5) Don't let your spack family visit it. It is just. Not. Good.
That's pretty much it, I think. Pfft, like I knew what I was doing. Gleave actually didn't talk to me for two years apart from to say stuff like, "you didn't draw that - it's too good for you". So HAHA OLD MAN. 100% in your FACE. (Don't tell him I said that... Srsly. He still worries me.)
Thanks again, and ignore the lonely ramblings of a procrastinator.

Kiitos Kiitos for the tips. Shall keep those in mind for next year.
Yeah, I'm more or less stationary. I write in the region of like 1000+ words a day or more, more or less every day, and apart from that I just surf cyberspace, draw and procrastinate, so I'm quite a lazy person...
I don't really know, I didn't search for you, I just kind of... stumbled in by accident. O.o It's always the way that whenever you AREN'T looking you find stuff... My god I wish it wasn't that way when I'm looking for some stuff at like 6 am and I'm too tired so I don't bother then get nagged at by some member of staff or other.
Any tips for the sketchpads? Yours were awesome, you must work yourself insanely hard with those. We have this one girl in our class who doesn't do anything at all, so I think she's more or less screwed! I've done a bit, so at least I can claim that much... just what I've done is mostly crap xD Also for drawing etc... actually any tip whatsoever would be amazingly helpful, as I'm more or less just worrying and procrastinating right now. After my 9 hour pencil drawing crapped up I'm just slowly slowly slowly doing a coloured realism piece... which is going well until I used thye wrong colour blue on the guy's face last night and spent like half an hour with a putty rubber trying to fix it. =X
Haha, no worries, I won't. Is it just me or is it creepy being in the art block all alone except for when he wonders in? O.o

Wow, 1000 words a day is pretty amazing. Is that fiction or fanfic or journal or...? I wish I could write that much. I'm too much of a perfectionist when it comes to writing, and it always gets too abstract and I have to reel it in.
Haha, wow. That is seriously cool. A few months ago I was convinced I'd lost my phone in school and was getting all panicky about it for like, 20 minutes, then ended up asking a friend to "just hold this while I look under the desk", and voila, my phone had been in my hand the whole time. Crazy days. Not exactly where the conversation was headed, but an amusing (for me, at least) anecdote to brighten the day.
Sketchpads? Hmm. To be honest, I did NOTHING in class for the whole 2 years and just absent-mindedly did some at home when I had a minute. It didn't feel like I was doing much work at all. So I guess that must've been really annoying for all the people who thought I'd done jack-shit. The best motivator for me was probably (one of) my best friends, who also got 100% (Anastasia), cause we're both of the same procrastinating mindset and wanted to do Art at Uni, spacks we are, so it was kind of a game to do more than each other. As a result I think we went a bit too far.
And one of my friends did nowt til a month or so before the deadline, then had a blitz. I'm not sure what she's got, but still. Don't give up hope on the lazy arses in your class. They may (may being the operative word) do fine.
I guess just stick EVERYTHING in your sketchpad that you've ever done, coursework or no. Just don't tell Gleave. Half of my stuff was pre-done to the GCSE course. And put loads of crappy working in that take you a minute per page. It's completely pointless, but it works. Remember, with GCSE Art, it's quantity, not quality. Ugh.
For drawing, I guess just do everything VERY lightly until you're sure of it. Build up layers. For my mushrooms, I picked two smooshed together like siamese twins, which was a mistake, so pick easy stuff and make it look amazing rather than mediocre impossible stuff. And while looking at your veg/fruit/mirror/whatever you're drawing, always remember; you can smash it afterwards. Tis what I always did, violence embodied I am.
And yes... Towards the end of the course me and Ana and Miriam stayed behind after school, but it always felt weird if we didn't have music on. You know, we didn't get much actual art done after school, but we did some amazing detective work, face painting, photo shoots, paint fights, dance practise and singalongs. Ha, creepy as it is, our art block is amazing fun.

My writing's pretty varied. Right now I'm jumping between a fanfiction and my own fiction. I prefer to write my own, but sometimes I'm uninspired, and I also worry a lot more about the quality of what I'm writing, whereas fanfiction I can relax a little more. I tend to have *random moments of inspiration*. Last one came in textiles, so I actually have no clue what I was supposed to be doing this weekend. Instead of writing whatever it was I was writing something or other, mostly pretty dark and abstract and all. My own piece has been going about 18 months now, about 70,000 words in various drafts... saying that I recently made a huge huge change, and er... well, totally changed it if I'm honest, it's the same character but he's now modern as apposed to fantasy genre. Well, I say that... he's lycanthropic, meaning he suffers from genetic related lycanthropia, which basically makes him a stuck up werewolf. I'm a little weird like that, I know, but that's just what I love to write about. I want to write this book that will make werewolves into something ordinary people might read about instead of trashy horror books about cliched man eating wolfmen. >.< Ack, I'm babbling. But anyway, I want to do Creative Writing at uni etc etc. So that's my dream stuff I guess.
My gosh, I lose stuff all the time... I'm seriously unorganised, so... xD
Haha, cool about your sketchpads. I kind of do that 'doing more' thing just with myself, I try to aim to do more than everyone else because I'm just odd like that. x3 The thing is with art, everyone says it's so hard to get an A* etc, but that makes me try harder, so hopefully might get an A if I work really hard... Hmmm... better start working I guess... x[
I haven't really ever done anything decent before the course so I don't think that will really work for me sadly. I just did Miss Bardell's crappy homeworks once in a while... I don't really like her so I didn't do all that much in year 8 and 9.
Yes it did seem to be very quantity based. I'll just try and spurn out loads and loads of it. I'm actually getting the hang of enjoying doing the sketchpads so I think I might be getting towards actually doing something in them.
I would love to imagine smashing it, but sadly it's of two of my favourite finnish metal musicians, so I wouldn't like to smash them up too bad as I'm hoping they'll return to the UK in November so I can see them again. I saw them back in April and it was just amazing, so... *fingers crossed* I'm hoping I'll get reasonable at drawing one of them as I wanted to do a final piece for movement theme sort of based around him and one of his lyrics, but if I can't draw him that might not happen! x$
I'm hoping I can rope my gothy art friend to come up to the art block more often after school so we can work on the stuff together. I want to go up there, but not all on my own. And at least she won't complain at my music choice if we're listening to anything. Unless you didn't guess or whatever I'm something of a goth metal-head so a lot of people don't like my music, haha. Including some stupid little year 8 who called me and emo so I went to lecture her on her social misconception... ooops.
Thanks so much for the tips, gets me more motivated, haha.

Although that would be an AMAZING accident, alas, sadly, no. I just googled JRock, as I thought that the visual kei costumes were really amazing, saw this picture and thought, "Oh, that looks like FUN." Little did I know it was not, indeed, fun. OH WELL I'm glad people actually told me who he was afterwards.
To be honest, I thought he was a promotion man for a magazine.

Thank you <3 As for the tutorials, well, you can always search around a bit on dA. I found ~nichol 's tutorials on lips, eyes and hair really helpful, and her work is truly amazing, so you could check out that. As for how I learned to do real life stuff, I started a few years back by just like, tracing the main aspects of the face lightly through a window or lightbox, then adding my own details. From there I began to map out areas of shading, then quit tracing altogether and just measured it out by eye. It really, really helps, even if it feels like cheating or you reckon it's pointless, cause it gives you the feel of how to draw a face. Also, if you're not as confident, printing out your ref in grayscale instead of colour is a huge help. I never really used any tutorials until about a week before I drew this.
Wow, I hope that answered your question xD And thanks again!

a very good piece of work there! the dark shading on the clothing is a nice contrast to the face; it appears that much more pale and smooth. he's got a very nonchalant expression that's mysterious, almost teasing. sorry i can't offer critiques on technique but seriously, it's a great job.

But yeah, I agree that the blending could be a lot smoother. I guess I shouldn't be so stubborn on "ZOMG HB PENCIL LAWL". There are so many more softnesses out there, why oh why did I not listen to my mother?
