Description

He won the vote for next redesign (on Instagram) by a complete and total landslide... which makes sense because everybody is thirsty for Mr. X himself, Remy LeBeau -- GAMBIT!

The main point of this series isn't to reinvent the wheel, but to distill each character down to a design that I believe captures their core essence by combining all or as many of their iconic looks as possible, diversifying the silhouettes and overall designs by incorporating aspects unique and inherent to them as a character, and adding cohesion by incorporating some sort of X motif beyond the usual X-buckle, chest logo, or shoulder patch we so often see. While you can design any number of outfits that "work" from random individual designs to fully uniformed teams, I felt that for the X-Men in particular reflecting each person's uniqueness and inherent beauty just makes sense. At one extreme, that means creating a totally brand new design if they've never had an iconic look before while at the extreme opposite end, it means barely tweaking a few things. This is an example of the latter.

Oh yes, the ultimate himbo thief whose ultimate heist was stealing Rogue's heart & marrying her. I'm a 90s kid & there was no way I was straying too far from his absurd "how is that even stealthy!?" outfit.

BIG HIMBO ENERGY HAIR: While Jim Lee established the definitive base look for Remy, my personal favorite take is that of Lee Weeks from the first Gambit miniseries -- bigger, swooshier hair! It's quite a bit different from the "beast" cut that Beast & Logan have, the short hair of Cyke, the various pixie cuts of various gals, and to me screams semi-edgy, rugged pretty boy that I picture Gambit to be.

X-MOTIFS - X-MASK, X-ETCHING, & X-YOKE: The 90s open face headsock thing usually has a T-shaped opening akin to a Mandalorian or Greco-Roman helmet. I turned it into an X shape, thus incorporating the x-motif into the suit itself. The upper chest armor also features an etched X instead of the usual random lines. The coat's back yoke has also been transformed into an X, an X-motif similar to Boom-Boom's x-lapels. You'll see this yoke on a similarly jacketed 90s character 👀 while the x-lapels will be on another blazered 80s character 👀👀

ICONIC TRENCH COAT: There was no way I couldn't use it as it's too essential to the look of Gambit. I tweaked it by adding the belt because the coat typically doesn't have one which is surprisingly because it feels more fun and dynamic. I also made it so the sleeved can be rolled up, which I prefer to the sleeves down. Lastly, I tried to make it so the jacket looks at least kinda cool even when closed.

WEDDING BAND: The wedding band was designed to have been made by Roxanne Washington a.k.a. Bling! She was a student of Rogue's during their time on Utopia and had a small role in their wedding, so I thought this would be a cute detail.

ICONIC COLORS - MAGENTA & TEAL ARMOR: I rejected some modern Gambit designs from the 2000s onward that featured muted colors or even straight up black. While that makes way more sense for a thief, I kept the bright flamboyant colors for several reasons. First, it matches his flamboyantly flirty nature -- think peacock, lol. Secondly, if you haven't noticed, I like when the outfits evoke the character's power whenever possible and for Remy here, his charged up playing cards are usually depicted as magenta... another reason I kept the dotted rectangles down his arms & legs which are reminiscent to said cards when charged (and also because I've been a sucker for stripes down the sides of pants since Han Solo). And lastly, because if it's really a problem, the coat can be closed up to cover the colors which you'll notice mutes the design quite a bit. The armor has been slightly tweaked/streamlined by omitting the extra piping around the shoulders, instead leaving more of the shoulders 'free.' Despite the bright colors, I did find the metal boots to be a bit silly when thinking about him sneaking around -- I kept picturing a knight just clanking around with heavy thuds with each step. So to make him a bit sneakier, I added rubber soles to the bottom of his feet that match the upper chest armor.

STRIP POKER: For the thirsty among you, there's a "strip poker" version -- just picture him saying "bang...you dead." Is this canon? I'll let you decide if he's actually got a full jumpsuit on underneath lol

OILED UP: For those dying of thirst, the final slide is of an oiled up Gambit.

KINETIC SIGNATURE: For my signature this time, Remy's helped by charging its potential up into a kinetic frenzy.
