The perspective in this couldn’t be any better! The style is so soft and together and I like the vines on the tree and the things hinging from the branches!

Oh my... your shading is amazing! The whole picture is great, but there are small details which irritates me.
The elves right knee looks a little bit like it is turning too the right, but the foot is pointing to a different direction, that makes that it is looking a little bit odd.
In my opinion the tendrils on the tree are a little bit to much eye catching that makes that the picture have two main spots to look at.
The trees in the background are of a completely different kind then the tree the elf is running to and are not that "jungly".
But there are many more awesome details on this picture, like the light which is falling true the canopy of leaves or the whole shading of the elf or the details of the grass...

and sorry for my bad English!

Wow. How did you make that background? its-ineedanewadjective- AMAZING! the little lamps along the vine/branch and that massive tree-it really gets your mind working, imaginging the sort of dewllings hidden in its twisted mass...lol. The elf is awsome aswell, his pose it so cool, catching him mid stride/leap/bound.

Love the beams of light braking through the canopy aswell ^^

Glad you like the background. Sometimes I start a piece based on a narrative idea, sometimes from a composition, or about a general mood like in this one. It kept changng as I was working on it, and looking at a bunch of different photos and paintings helped give me ideas.

For the actual painting of it, it's all about painting things in and then glazing them back or putting them on a transparent layer. Thanks fr the comment!

OMG this is wonderful. The pose, colors... As if I was there, living whole my life as an elf, and knowing their agility and speed. I really like the colours and the lightning, but one thing annoys me a little bit. The cheek of the elf, seems so full. Maybe it was supposed to be like that but, well... I don't know.

Anyway... Great work!

thanks for the reply! I never really thought about that before, but I think you're right about that cheek. I was probably looking at a distorted photo, incorrectly translated the reference, or just screwed up. I keep meaning to go back into this piece and add stuff, and hopefully I'll make some time in the coming months. Thanks!

Well... I think the cheeks isn't drawn in a bad way, I think it is natural but looks a bit "cheeky"... No one said it's supposed to be a perfect guy. It adds a litle 'soul' to the character however. Anyways, I like it.

Good luck and keep up your work!

Fricken FANTASTIC, I love the perspective and lighting.

If you have a step by step composing of this image I'd love to see it!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

theincredibleandy In reply to zikrostag [2006-12-02 18:16:34 +0000 UTC]

oh geez, it went through so many changes that a step-by-step would be really exhaustive. I basically took forever on redoing thumbnails and basic comps, trying to fine-tune the design until it was safe to start doing the final drawing and whatnot. The big focus is on making the initial thumbnail look interesting at 2 inches tall, with just black and white, without any line art. If you're trying to do the drawing before the basic value shapes are figured out, it's a future of nothing but agony for you. You have to repaint things constantly, and if you don't you'll have a flawed piece that was kind of a waste of time.

Hope that's a good enough substitute for the step-by-step.

Interesting! I'm just developing my skills, but I've been taking a different approach.. Just getting a rough wireframe down then I end up changing it a lot as the painting comes together.. I do see how it would make things much easier to develop the concept more fully... I guess I just have trouble visualizing the final image until it's being painted.

I've gotten in the habit of saving to a new file every session I sit down.. That way I can go back and watch my own progression and look for improvements.

Thanks for replying, It's been very insightful, I hope I can learn from you.

now im not an illustrator so i feel bad pointing stuff like this out when i know i couldnt even come close to drawing that elfs toe, let alone a painting like this.
but the vines on the trunk of the tree stand out too much, maybe its the plaement, maybe the tone, or sharpness, but it just caught my eye, and when things stand out that don't seem to be things that should stand-out, i like to mention them. many eyes are better than two, right?
and as for standing out, this work does. tasty. good colour pallette, use of lighting for mood and ambience, and sense of movement and urgency. and as a country boy stuck in a city, it makes me want to get home to the shires for a bit of nature. thanks for sharing.

theincredibleandy In reply to kidscruff [2006-03-22 18:47:58 +0000 UTC]

thanks for the reply. I agree, some of those vines stick out way too much. I think I just got lazy with them, sadly. I also had a hard time figuring out the form for most of those parts. I wanted to make the wildlife rich like king kong wildness, but I could only do so much without losing control and making flat mushy stuff. It's all about practice...

Thanks again! I love it when people are willing to point things out.

kidscruff In reply to theincredibleandy [2006-03-22 19:33:01 +0000 UTC]

no worries bro, your stuff utterly rocks. the wildnerness certainly is rich and lushious, you got that feel going on in there. and yeah, practice practice practice. and no fear of "going wrong" is handy too.
great stuff, hope to see more in the future. +watch

The angle, proportions, and detailing is pretty amazing. I'm pretty blown away in all honesty.

Okay, critiques. I agree with the comment for the coat. The main thing I would think about is adding maybe a slight shadow over the branch just to indicate where he is landing. For the most part though I think you can tell he will land on the branch.

Nothing really else, fantastic work! Are you aware of a current competition being held at a site called CGsociety. They have a contest right now that I think would be right up your alley. Check it out if you haven't already [link]

Thanks for the response! I'd given up on DA for critiques (everybody loves everything here), but I'm glad you were willing to make some suggestions. I wanted to make a light-shining-through-leaves effect, but eventually I figured that I would need to change the angle of light to make that work, and I liked the value shaping I already had. The shadow is a simple thing, though, I should probably do that.

I checked out your work. In general, I like the idea of where you're going, but some selective refinement and more subtle palettes would help. I usually say people should draw from life, but I think the main thing is to draw inspiration from as many sources as possible. Your work's not "there" yet, but it's getting there.

Again, glad to hear from you! Ever check out conceptart.org? That's my home on the internet. Everything else is just added exposure for me. Later!

No prob

I've been browsing around lately looking for some forums to join so I can get some better critiques too. Yeah, deviantart just isn't really the place for real in depth comments for the most part. I honestly haven't been to conceptart.org yet, I'll check it out for sure.

Thanks for checking out my work and telling me what you think of it. Finding inspiration from as many sources is definately the way to go. I'll just keep plugging at it.
