I only saw this is because I have heard of Neon Genesis Evangelion even though I haven't watched it yet. I'm not really into mech animes and such, but I love the opening of Neon Genesis Evangelion.

You should definitely watch it. I have a friend who doesn't like mech animes either but even he says it's really good. It goes past the mechs and puts a lot of effort in it's characters.
