This was one of the first piece I submitted to dA back in 2009. It was my best piece at the time and I still think it's a pretty good one. I was almost afraid I wouldn't show any improvement but I at last I did and I'm proud of it.

well... I personally like sketchy art more than smudged. and the second pic is smudged like those OEL online mangas. I like the undies in the first picture. in the second it's just mah. I also dislike the bandages. the second picture might look more realistic or 3D-ish, but it looks less artistic. It looks altogether too smooth. And the chips on the ground look way better on the first one. I also think the details are more detailed although the second one have more things in the background, but they are kind of unnecessary. but I like that the second one have actually something on the posters behind. but the undies are probably the main reason. haha

oh I see. There is something more organic about the piece when the artist goes sketchy (cross hatching), you can see more of their hand movements in the piece which is why I think you like it more. I do regret not being able to do the same in new one but I kind of went over board with the copic markers which gave the clean smooth (smudged) look. The only thing I would have to disagree is that there's nothing less artistic about it except the fact its a different approach/ style of shading.
lol and your the second to mention about the bandages. Those were actually a new thing I added when improving the character himself through the years. It makes more sense in the story I'm putting him in that I'm currently working on. But you're right, in this picture it's kinda of unnecessary to be having bandages in this realistic setting.

Looking at your before, you wouldn't think it would need *that* much improvement...compared to your after, you did so so so many things better, including overall composition, coloring, posing, and proportioning. This really shows you the difference that can happen in three years, even to great art

Right? That's why I was a bit nervous at first when I choose this piece to redo. But in the end it worked out.
