Description Here is Part 1 of 2 (see below for the linke to part 2) of the second of my adventures into comics lettering tutorials. This one has lots more picture examples, so I had to split it into two parts. This isn't so much a direct tutorial as an exploration of some of the theory behind different uses for lettering. For example, here we'll be talking about: creating emphasis using bold and italics, the effects of breaking up dialogue in different ways, the use of the double dash (--) and ellipsis (...), color and typography. In the first tutorial we learned what buttons to press, now we're going to talk about how to use that knowledge!

Special thanks to and who did the art for most of the example pictures.

Again, I'd like this to be a work in progress, so please give me your questions, comments, complaints, and general feedback!

When you finish, here's [THE LINK TO PART 2 OF 2]

This is a highly informative piece of tutorial for an important part of comic making! Thank you for taking the time to compile all this.

Might I suggest you submit this over to ? It's an active site for tutorials of all kinds and I know a lot more people will be thankful for this.

My favourite part is how you exemplified dialogue with characters obviously drawn for a different context. "I've always loved you..." Hilarious!

I am no comic artist, but your tutorials about them are very interesting...I read comics, but never stopped to consciously think about what all those techniques meant.

And that pirate joke is *awful!!!* LOL! I laughed my rear end off at it. I love it!

Wow, this is a really good tutorial, I am trying to make my own comic but I am having a hard time with the lettering. This is extremely useful thank you very much. The dashes were completely new to me, I am definitely going to use them. Also figured I made my balloons to big. Once again thank you.
