The gestation period is 16 weeks. The litter size usually consists of around 3 to 4 pups of about 1 kilogram (2.2 lb) each, which are born blind and helpless. The females rear them alone, sheltering them in dens such as thickets and rocky crevices. The father of the pups generally takes no part in rearing them. Unrelated wandering male Arcanines may even kill pups to make the female receptive. Once weaned of its mothers breast milk, young Growlithes are taught essential survival skills by its mother. Mother Arcanines will show their pups how and what to hunt. Once the young Growlithe pups show signs of fire breathing capabilities, the mother will teach them how to use it when hunting. The pups become independent around 18 months of age, but it is not until they are around 2–2½ years old that they leave their mother.

Native to much of eastern and southern Asia, the Arcanine is an apex predator and an obligate carnivore. In the wild, Arcanines mostly feed on larger and medium sized Pokémon such as Stantlers, Tauros, Piloswines and Swinubs. Young Growlithe pups will tend to go after young Stantlers and Swinubs, otherwise they rely on what their mother catches. Sometimes, Especially in Siberia they will prey on Slakoths, Totodiles, Vigoroths, Croconaws, and once fully matured Arcanines will go after the Slakings and Feraligatrs as well. Like many predators, they are opportunistic and will eat much smaller prey, such as Aipoms, Magikarps, Marils and Farfetch'ds.
