Description

I share here my application drawing test for simpleshow. From the first test phases to the corrections from the studio to the redrawn stuff with the changes. I got rejected, for whatever reasons, but keep hate or negativity beside, they had their legit reasons. I just thought you might be interested what you must do sometimes to get a job and what process you get trough and then there is still no guarantee that you make it.

Have fun with this!

Hi Thermrock, I have exactly the same bad experience with Simpleshow. The fact is I do not receive comments over drawings, just a mail saing that I need to improve anatomy and keep practissing because of the serveral styles they have (really?) Here you can see part of my work... frustrating..

I got into a interview at the studio. Their main argument was that I am not able to come down from my quality work to their simple style. Not sure if this is an international thing, but there is some kind of arrogance in studios nowadays, that their style -because it has some followers or popularity- is the one an artist has to archive 100% or elsewise the audience will not buy it.

While I can say I know where you're getting at, I've never "pitched" for an illustration job without being initially hired for it, so it's pretty interesting to see how it works as a whole.

Oh I feel your pain, maybe not to the same extent but there have been plenty of times in the past where I've had to deviate so far from my choice style or subject and draw something I absolutely hated drawing from first stroke to last-save, all in the name of trying to get in with an artistic company. Like this here, my attempts at doing what someone else wanted weren't "bad" either, but clearly they could see just as much as I could that there was no heart and no joy put into creating it anywhere, so nothing came of it for me either At this point I don't even care anymore, putting up with my crappy day-job seems almost more bearable than spending all day drawing shit I hate

And of course I loved how easy everyone else thought it was for an artist to switch styles or mediums to cater towards "where the moneys at". The amount of times my family told me I should be designing logo's, tattoo's, illustrating female pinups, drawing kiddy-crap or airbrushing cars because "that's where all the art jobs are" was infuriating. Thank God people have laid off with that in recent years. Expecting an artist of one type to conform to the style of another, is like expecting a rock musician to go into classical. They are probably not going to be any good at it, and even if they were - you can bet they won't enjoy it. And art-related job isn't even worth it if you're not going to enjoy the projects handed to you or if you have little respect for the creative directors who ironically aren't very creative

This sounds an awful lot like spec work.

Yeah, I know the feeling. I recently applied to an animation studio and was turned down (the video's in my DA gallery now), but it was a great learning experience and I made some good clips for my reel. Knowing how to take rejection well definitely helps a lot.

Viele Bewerber (vllt.), also genauere Auslese.

Wusste garnicht dass du aus deutschland bist. Dafür hast du viel zu französisch gezeichnet.

Very interesting look at things!

I couldn't understand the notes of course, but for the most part I understood what they were 'saying'.
And both versions look very nicely done.

I summary they wanted to get less detailed and more close to their home style.
