Description
The Renown-class was a class of eight light cruisers designed to act as destroyer leaders in the early 1930s. Designed to be as mobile as possible for its frame, its superstructure featured little to no armor, with the bridge not even having a roof. During the war their light destroyer-sized armaments proved detrimental to their performance in surface combat as they lacked the speed and maneuverability of lighter, smaller traditional destroyers, resulting in the loss of three Renown cruisers in the opening of the war.The Renown was later refitted to perform as an anti-aircraft cruiser by removing the seaplane catapult to fit an additional three 5'' two-gun turrets and an improved sensory suite.
The Renown as an anti-aircraft cruiser was replaced by the Majestic-class heavy cruiser in 1941 and were later given to the navies of allied states that suffered heavy losses among their navies.
