Description

The Sonorous-class is a class of five heavy cruisers which served the Kingdom of Elipida between 1915 to 1944 with all ships being sunk by accidents or enemy fire.

They were originally designed and built as improved light cruisers meant to counter foreign armored cruisers armed with 7in guns. Under the 1922 Naval Treaty Proposal, they would have been reclassified as heavy cruisers, however the treaty collapsed due to political bickering between powers and the inability to force anyone to comply with the limitations. While Elipida was free to keep their original designation, it was eventually decided that the ships be reclassified and serve as the starting point for all future 'small-caliber' heavy cruisers (as the majority of already existing improved armored cruisers were armed with 10.5in guns)

Brenthill had the shortest career, as within a year of commission she ran aground and could not be refloated. Cartgonie and Birher served as convoy escorts and were both sunk by enemy action. Sonorous and Deadwall served as fleet escorts in Task Force 40 and participated in the Königskind Incident, where their crews were vaporized by the Hosh superweapon. While the ships were largely intact, it was not possible to board them without becoming fatally ill. Both ships, along with all ships in Task Force 40, were scuttled.
