Description Madonna of the May
May 26th 2013
8.5 x 9 inches

"O Flower of flowers, Our Lady of the May!
Thou gavest us the World's one Light of Light:
Under the stars, amid the snows, He lay;
While Angels, through the Galilean night
Sang glory and sang peace:
Nor doth their singing cease,
For thou their Queen and He their King sit crowned
Above the stars, above the bitter snows;
They chant to thee, the Lily, to Him the Rose,
With white Saints kneeling round.
Gone is cold night: thine now are spring and day:
O Flower of flowers, our Lady of the May!"
- "Our Lady of May" by Lionel Johnson

Happy Feast of St. Augustine of Canterbury! I just finished this particular piece yesterday. I wanted to do some kind of Marian image for the month of May, and I had seen this one image of the Virgin and Child that I thought was so beautiful, similar to this one ( [link] ) though I can't seem to find the original image I used. Anyway, I also wanted to do something similar to Sando Botticelli's Madonnas (which I love), so I started sketching this one. I had started this back around mid-April, but I hadn't gotten much of a chance to work on it until yesterday. I don't know if I'm perfectly happy with it, but I suppose it's alright.

Thank you!

Do you have sources for that? I'd be interested in reading them!

Sister Emmerich's visions describe the Lord and His mother that way. I drew a picture called "Jesus and Mary" which illustrates my comment. Check out my gallery for the pic.

Thank you! Yes, I definitely tried to base it off of the beautiful Madonnas of master Botticelli. I don't think I quite succeeded in this particular regard, but maybe that just means I need to give it another try.

It's actually easy y'know, Botticelli paints with a highly stylised...umm...style. I'll draw one of his Lamentations soon.Β IΒ Β Β his Madonnas.

Oh this is wonderful! Botticelli is amazing. I can see the influence. And of course fat sleepy baby Jesus! The grape-motif border is lovely too. I like the way it's all carved-stone-looking.

Thank you!! I can't say I'm super happy with how...well, pink everything turned out, but I am happy with the grape vine border. Ah well, I'll have to do some other Botticelli-style piece eventually. This one doesn't even do justice by being merely inspired by him.

Aranov In reply to Theophilia [2013-08-07 23:45:22 +0000 UTC]

It might be different in person, but it doesn't look too pink to me. The border is, of course, gorgeous and detailed and aMAZing as usual.

This is really stunning! I do like how while there is a lot of detail, it also feels lighter and more casual than some of your other pieces. Perhaps it's because the colors are overall softer and not as deep or intense. I really like the sky background and the circle-frame.

I saw this and thought, "Hmm, this reminds me of Botticelli," then I looked down at your comments, saw Botticelli's name pop up, and I went, "Hey!" Anyways, I like how the contours and folds of their clothes have a kind of rhythm (if that makes any sense), as well as how Baby Jesus is holding a strand of Mary's hair. That's just so sweet. Good job!

The patterned frame is absolutely fantastic ! It must have taken you so much time ! But it was worht it! And the Virgin's expression is so sweet and motherly, it's quite moving ! I have to say I find baby Jesus' head a bit too big (compared to to His mother's) but otherwise it's a gorgeous piece of art as usual!

Theophilia In reply to Eosphora [2013-08-03 20:41:19 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! Honestly, that's probably one of the things I'm actually really happy with in this picture. I think it came out looking too pink and sentimental. Ah well.

His might be a bit too big, though maybe not. Some children have extraordinarily large heads, so I don't think His is right out of the realm of possibility, but you're probably right. He's definitely a big baby in this picture.

That's not weird at all! Who wouldn't want to see the Holy Family? I would love to give Mary and Joseph a big hug and snuggle with baby Jesus all day...and paint them! Man, I wish we have photographs or videos of them....

Me too... It would be so incredibly comforting!Β

Yes, it's a pity we don't... then again, if I remember correctly (but I probably don't... XD) one of the Middle Ages saints (really not sure whom... my memory, sometimes...) wrote that what gave Christians strength was the fact they could believe without seeing. I suppose that makes sense, but still, it would have been great to have a look at Their faces.Β

Ah, the watercolors aren't difficult. I mostly just use them to color in. I do all my linework with ink. That makes it a whole lot easier.
