Description Nicknamed the "Demon" by Jovian fighter pilots, the lethal SF-316SR Wasp Interceptor/Light Assault fighter is a short-ranged starfighter designed to defend capital ships from smallship attack. With its agility and powerful anti-fighter armament, the Wasp has proven itself to be the most effective interceptor in the solar system.

Its lightweight frame and large, powerful engines allow it to reach absurd speeds, and its 40 air-pressure guidance jets allow it to turn on a dime.

Due to their high speed and maneuverability, Wasps are occationally used as fast attack assault fighters as well; though their lack of powerful onboard sensor systems limits them to operating within range of a command ship or sacrificing missiles for sensor pods. In addition, their lack of heavy weapons constrains them to assaults on soft targets.

In the hands of a governing authority I would call these Eagles or Hawks; however, in more nefarious hands I would call them Vultures or Raptors

Just curious, if this is a space interceptor, why does it appear to have engine intakes?

On another note, I'd like to see you come out with a dedicated "Carrier" space vessel. That would be to cool!

Engine intakes can be used in space interceptors for a simple reason: they still help cool the engines. If its sealed then the engines can still produce plenty of heat but the open intakes would allow the fighter to operate in the atmosphere should they need to and also help cool the engines, even with a lack of air

Alright then, thanks.

That is very awesome... damn I lack all ability to model any type of fighter what so ever.

This is some seriously good work, keep it up.

Impressive detail...you could put together some nice action scenes of bombing runs on cap ships by these.

This thing's got 40 maneuvering thrusters? Its gotta consume a lot of propellant to feed all those...Oh hey, is there any relation to your other wasp fighter? I noticed the same basic design principle. Is this perhaps a refit model?

And does WASP stand for anything? From what i remember, most ships' designations aren't all capital letters unless they're acronyms. Best i could think of was 'Weaponized AeroSpace Platform' though that pretty much applies to all spacecraft.

It'd be interesting to see some 'B-type' equipment that would combine two missile hardpoints into a single mount for a heaver anti-ship missile, giving the wasp a bigger bite if a proper strike craft wasn't available.

Nice work on the interiors, by the way

The thrusters are pressurized air, and tiny. With a lightweight frame, and with no resistance from atmosphere or the like, it takes virtually no thrust to swing the ship around. Not to mention that the Wasp is a short range fighter: its not intended to operate independently of a carrier. If a fighter were to be involved in an operation so extended that it began to run low on presure, it could simply dock and be refitted (and reloaded, and re-equiped with a missile payload). Since all of the guidance thrusters feed off the same pressure tanks, theres no risk of a single thruster running out of pressure independently.

As for the WASP, the standard is to have a classification name (of military vehicles) in italics, or framed by apostrophes; in an instance where those uses are disallowed, the standard is to revert to capitals. Deviant art doesn't use italics or most punctuation in its deviation titles, so I'm forced to use the capitalization.

The proper title would be the SF-316 'Wasp' Interceptor.

And yes, I've been thinking about doing variants with heavy hardpoints and/or double hardpoints (for precision missiles or cluster weapons) for various kinda of missiles.

Ahh, thats right...i was thinking of WASP versus W.A.S.P.

Do you have any designs for a dedicated strike craft carrier? I noticed some of your other capital ships had what looked like docking ports, but i dont think any of them were specifically noted.

Currently I'm kinda... spread out. I have models going for a station, a nodegate (think wormhole, but with a warp drive twist...) a bomber, an assault fighter, a carrier, and a cruiser.

So at some point, I will have a carrier up.
