Description
I REALLY hope this is the last time I have to remake this ship. I thought I was satisfied with the last version, but after studying it closely, there were just too many things I didn't like and I opted for a major overhaul.Anyways, here it is, I hope you all like it, because its going to be the main ship in my upcoming webcomic (with Shawn Harris [link] ) Blood Money (which is why I was so anal about making it perfect)
Newest Version of: [link]
The CHAMPION-class frigate is the strike frigate of the UESF. Designed for high-speed hit and run operations, the CHAMPION-class is often deployed in a supporting role to battlecruisers and strike carriers.
In order to gain the tactical advantage of speed (and the long cruising times required for strike forces), the CHAMPION-class design makes some sacrifices in the areas of hull integrity and armor plating. Its weapon systems, however, are top-notch.
IN BLOOD MONEY: The 'Fenris' is a stolen UESF CHAMPION-class frigate under the command of Captain Jason Hart, a notorious rimworld pirate. Nicknamed 'Blackheart', Captain Hart has a reputation for deviousness and efficiency, and has evaded capture so many times that there he is rumored by many bounty hunters hunters to be a legend or a ghost.
The Fenris, in turn, serves Captain Hart perfectly. Quick, agile, deadly, and screened against the all but the most advanced long-range sensors, the CHAMPION-class has proven itself to be an incredible pirate ship: with a few modifications, of course.

LOVE this ship, in fact, I love it so much I am building a ship based on it on Starmade! (don't know what that is? google it, pretty awesome game.) Once Im finished ill let you see how I did. If your interested. :3

This is a very well designed vessel from the appearance. With the exception of the "Forward Aileron" like structures, there is minimal obscuring of the weapons line of fire Tiered mounting of the main battery, and the inclusion of side mounted turrets to increase weapon coverage while adding to a devastating forward salvo. The addition of the aileron like structure suggests atmospheric or nebula operations.

Good idea. Even this description is okay, if you think about it, it can fight in atmosphere. Ships don't need the special desing to be faster because there is no air in the space.

Wow, im blown away, this is amazing.
Ive just been working on a few ships myself, but they are ramshackle in the fact that they draw heavily off Halo and various other references to create it. I havent found a way to really illustrate them, or use a program to actually physically represent it, but the ideas are all in my head. ^-^
I have some issues identifing exactly what roles all of the weaponry on this vessel are, but i can understand many of the main points of it.
It looks like a very intricate, without being too overbearing, i love the angled plates and the engine placement. Very well thought out. As a pirate frigate, i think it would do almost perfectly, only, i see one thing that i would add to it. The capacity for Dropship(s) or other boarding craft, so that you can take the spoils from the opposing forces faster and strike with more efficiency without compromising the entire opposing vessel.
Ima have to look at your other works, because this is outstanding works, and although i dont have the artistic capablility to create my own, i may have the technical aspects (well, general technical aspects XD) down decently, though i know little of historical proportions, i have a very dull knowledge on pirates as well. I do however, have some grasp on tactics. Anyhow, tremendous work, i wish to talk to you further!

I really like it, it looks fantastic - the angled panels make it look stylish while retaining a functional feel. The only part of it I feel is a bit off is the rectangular fin bit that covers the engines at the back. Maybe you could chamfer it off a bit? It's your call - overall it's a wicked design.

Ok I really like this one, It's realy great
As a Pirate ship: because of the speed and armaments it's an obvious choice to have one, you don't see current big street gangs drive arround in a stollen armored tank do you (I'm comparing a fast car/motorcycle as the frigate with the tank as a big armored and slow battlecruiser)
Only a few technical details I find about it:
Doesn't the wing block the docking port, i mean not directly but when I saw your space station it seems as if there isn't enough room to have the wing there. or do the docking ports slide out?
On hit and runs: about the running part, only a few guns seem a bit low since not only intercepting fast cruisers are gonne get after it but also fightercraft small point defence's are a must to defent yourself agains fightercraft and incoming missiles.
Cruise missile's, well those are more a long range weapon and hit and run attacks aren't exactly long range attacks.

TheOrangeGuy In reply to Typhyr [2008-10-22 16:13:05 +0000 UTC]
The docking port extends, yes.
It has 12 CIWS (point-defense) guns.
It has 4 racks of anti-fighter missiles.
Cruise Missiles and Torpedos: In my setting the traditional role of cruise missiles and torpedoes has been somewhat redefined. A 'Cruise Missile' is a ship-to-ship weapon with a medium range, something that can hit from end of the battlefield to the other.
A 'Torpedo' is an ultra-close range missile with less of a guidance system, designed to deliver a huge amount of firepower at very close range.

Typhyr In reply to TheOrangeGuy [2008-10-22 18:13:01 +0000 UTC]
ok, I see 6 point defence turret near the bridge (3 on each side and if I'm not mistaken the backside of the bridge - tower give some limits to turning that direction, maybe it's just me)
where are the other 6 point defences placed?
if they are on the same space at the bottom of the ship there line of fire and therefor area of effect is limited. If they are placed somewhere else that would make sense
and yea, I can be a difficult man I'm just looking at it in my own way
π: 0 β©: 1
TheOrangeGuy In reply to Typhyr [2008-10-22 19:31:49 +0000 UTC]
I like people being picky.
Anyways: Yes, those are in front of the bridge, and looking at them I should move them. Maybe four behind the bridge and two somewhere on the nose.
There are six on the bottom, fairly far forward.
π: 0 β©: 1
Typhyr In reply to TheOrangeGuy [2008-10-23 10:43:29 +0000 UTC]
well, if you put 2 of the 6 on top of the ship at the bridge close to the engine's and 2 from the 6 at the bottom of the ship to the bottom part of the engine's location would have a blind spot defended by those turrets against incomming missile's, fighters, yea, those can be taken care off by your missile launchers but it's incomming fire like missile's that consern me for when you retrait, not attack is a succes if you only think and prepare for as far as the attack. (sorry if any bad english)
the defend the back thing I remember from playing Crimson Skies (computer version, old version), zepelins in that gameare easy targets from that angle

TheOrangeGuy In reply to Typhyr [2008-10-23 17:11:39 +0000 UTC]
Well part of it is that the CHAMPION-class has a pair of rear-facing countermeasure launchers by the engines. You can pump out chaff, flares, decoys, or missile-seeking-drones to deter missiles from directly behind, and it does have a pair of rear-facing missile launchers.
π: 0 β©: 1
Typhyr In reply to TheOrangeGuy [2008-10-24 11:14:27 +0000 UTC]
ah, good point, well you should put countermessure's in the technical info too but still, some extra CIWS guns would be a powerfull defence.
π: 0 β©: 2
TheOrangeGuy In reply to Typhyr [2008-10-24 17:08:43 +0000 UTC]
Oh and I did end up adding a pair of CIWS guns, right above the windows in the front (where the missile launchers are in this version) and moved two of the ones near the bridge to right over the engines.

I used to be in the habit of adding Electronics Warfare packages, countermeasures, sensor systems, etc. to my ships info pages but it always just looked like "class V this" and "class IV That" and it never made that much of a difference, exept to really observant people like you.

Had to type and submit that comment right before i left for work, so i didnt get to be as elaborate as i would have prefered.
Still, what i see here is a culmination of all the best aspects of your Champion variations. Just the right ammount of detailing makes it appear complex, while not overwhelming. The newer angled bridge definately suits this ship more than the older rounded one. I'll be waiting for your orthographic shots to see if you did anything about the apparent "flatness" of the bottom hull.
Overall, I'm completely impressed. This one is definately worthy to be the primary ship in your comic. It's a bit awkward for me trying to imagine Frigates being able to survive on their own, as i've always believed them to be incredibally small compared to other ships, and to be little more than cannon fodder unless deployed in large numbers. Hearing that some guy can take one, wreak havoc on the outer rim, and move like a ghost kinda boggles the mind.

TheOrangeGuy In reply to FatalPapercut [2008-10-21 15:49:00 +0000 UTC]
Thank you SO MUCH.
As my toughest critic, your opinion means alot to me.
As for the bottom: I really should post an isometric bottom view, the bottom of the new version was never flat. Its actually quite articulated, and I haven't done much to it since the first version of this iteration.
It's actually a bit better than the top of the hull in my opinion.
As for frigates: yes, they're small, but not THAT small. Frigates are still warships, and they're tougher than any non-military (or at least HEAVILY combat retrofit, so much so that it basically classifies as a military ship) ship in space.
Consider: The US navy now operates two kinds of ships; Destroyers and Cruisers. Prior to the 1980s, the US classified ships that fell into a destroyer catagory but were bigger than some number of tons as Frigates. Basically, any destroyer sized ship that was intended more as suplimentary surface ship (anti-warship or land target) capability rather than anti-submarine and AA.
Oliver Hazard Pery class Frigate: 525ft. Ticonderoga class cruiser: 567ft.
See?
During the American revolution, the American navy consisted entirely of frigates.
The Fancy and the Queen Anne's Revenge, the two largest pirate ships off all time, were both frigates.
Also, I would like to point to my experience as a pirate in eve online, which, honestly, is the closest you can ever get to a future simulator, from economy and mining to fleet battles of 300+ people over territory. EvE forces you to roleplay, because the roles you play in eve are exactly the same as the ones your character plays, sans the fact that you're a computer gamer as opposed to an ACTUAL pod pilot.
In EvE, when I first took to piracy, I flew a cruiser, which in eve's hierarchy of ships is the same size and role as a frigate relative to other universes (Frigates in eve are basically fighters/aircraft, Destroyers are AA corvetters, cruisers are frigates, Battlecruisers are... actually battlecruisers are battlecruisers... and battleships are cruisers. Dreadnoughts take the traditional role held by battleships, and carriers are carriers)
Sorry to ramble on. Anyways, I flew a cruiser. And it was overkill. I was too slow and too big, and I often got caught by gangs and things with far bigger teeth than myself.
So when I tried again, I did it in a frigate. In a Starfighter-sized and powered ship, I did FAR better preying on shipping and miners than in a cruiser. I was fast enough to run in, make the kill or ransom, and make it out alive with the loot.
So to opperate in something as big as a frigate takes balls, and skill, to be honest. Though admitedly, the Fenris is a whicked fast puppy for a warship.

That's gotta be it then...our frames of reference are a tad unbalanced. The closest i've been to what EvE sounds like is a game called Freelancer, but that focused more on fighter combat then capital ships. Freelancer is where i draw my universal settings from, like how border stations operate and pirate rading happens, while i turn to Nexus: The Jupiter Incident and Homeworld 2 for fleet tactical maneuvers and ship classification. I''m now a firm bleiever that i'm not as much of a history buff as you may be, which is why some of the things i throw out may not make a whole lot of sense compared to real-world events / machinery (most notablly the mis-sizing of my dreadnought)
Hearing you talk about your EvE exploits reminds me of the other day when i was thinking "Jack McSwain...that just SOUNDS like a pirate name"...guess i was right.
And i'm your toughest critic?
NAWWWWWWWWW...
Really????

Oh, as for history buff: I'm not really, but I'm a firm believer in the whole "research every detail relevent to your fields of interest" thing.
When I first started designing starships seriously, at about age 14, I started researching naval warfare modern and historical. That, and I've been a pirate goob since I was old enough to talk, starting with peter pan and quickly progressing through Robert Lois Stephenson and onwards to Cutthroat Island.
I only know what I've picked up on the side about history at large, but I know an insane amount about naval warfare and piracy.
If you wan to learn more about historical piracy in a non-boring way, pick up a copy of "The Republic Of The Pirates". The Author escapes me at the momment, but its one of the few non-fiction books I've ever been able to enjoy, and in fact I love it (with the exeption of the blabbering on about this one admiral, which can mostly be skipped)
It's basically an incredibly detailed, painstakingly researched history of the Golden Age of Piracy, from Henry Morgan to Blackbeard's long and bloody death at his barbaque.
And its FUN to read.

Yeah, well when I changed my name from Ben to Jack (long story, its my middle name) people kept saying that.
Couple that with the fact that my facial hair, long locks, and pair of loop earings make me look like a Spanish pirate in real life...

Ha HA!! There you go! Don't change a DAMN THING, and make sure you create a backup of this one.
And the slanted nose is TONS better than the flat one.
Oh, and does your comic start before Hart has this, or are we going to be treated to a flashback of the daring heist in action?
Any relation of Fenris and Fenrir?
π: 0 β©: 2
TheOrangeGuy In reply to FatalPapercut [2008-10-21 15:15:31 +0000 UTC]
Oh. Possibility of a flashback in the future. At the time of the start of the webcomic, Captain Hart commands the Fenris and the Raven, a heavily-armed Jackrabbit mk 2 which he uses for hauling, salvaging, and extra firepower (if needed).
π: 0 β©: 0
TheOrangeGuy In reply to FatalPapercut [2008-10-21 15:13:58 +0000 UTC]
I am finally happy with this, and I'm so glad you are too.
Backups will be on the computer, my semi-recent external hardrive, and two flash drives.
Yes, the slanted nose is better, it just took a HELL of a lot of experimentation to find a way to make it look less... blocky when I did it that way.
'Fenris' is short for 'Fenrisulf' which means, literally, Fenris (the) Wolf. I toyed with calling it Fenrir, but Fenris just flows better.
Again, SO glad you like this one. I beefed up the point-defense firepower a bit too.
