I'm surprised I didn't think to publish something like this earlier. Something where I throw a ton of different expression types at my model's facial rig to see how well it works. And so far, it seems pretty good! But that's just my opinion. If you think something somewhere looks a bit off, let me know! Try to be specific, though. Saying "This one looks weird" with nothing else tends to not be very helpful, as I can't make any conclusions on what I can do to fix or improve these expressions based on that kind of feedback. I tend to not care how harsh feedback is, as long as the feedback is descriptive enough for me to understand what and why you think something looks off.
But yeah, regardless of that, this was quite a feat to come to. This is the result of almost a year long detour of the main objective of this project to really, really tackle the many problems the old rig had. Spent a lot of time re-educating myself, asking for help from other artists, and implementing tons of new features into the rig to allow for these types of expressions to happen just by manipulating the facial rig. All of these poses can and will work in animation. I feel like I'm almost pretty much where I need to be at this point. If anyone has any good feedback on a few of these faces, I'll definitely try to improve and fix parts of the rig a bit more to make those changes, but otherwise, this is the facial rig in its final form.

These are absolutely insane - the amount of detail I've seen you put into your models over time is ridiculous. I've honestly never seen a 3d pony model that looks so...good?

Interesting exercise, very well done! Are you using shapekeyΒ drivers for your facial animation? Also, I'm curious which rig you're using.

Yeah, I have a bit of a problem with the one in row 2 column 2 because she looks absolutely destroyed and it makes me feel sad.
But really, thanks so much for putting this together! I'll definitely be using this for reference when practicing expressions, these are fantastic.

This idea is brilliant! I'm amazed by how much depth there is to your models. Definitely keeping this as a reference guide for expressions. It's really helpful that you've done the nitty gritty in conceptualizing horses in a 3 dimensional space with this kind of detail! Love it!

Personally I wouldβve made two crying emotions. A deep sob like the one you have a general sad but with tears. I think also having the eye shines so big on the crying messes with the emotion trying to be portrayed, even if the eyes would technically be more shiny when wet I would save big eye shines for a happy crying. Iβm not sure if the eye shines are actually scaleable but if they are I feel like they would add to the effect of different emotions.
I think a lot of the expressions of benefit from the hair having emotion as well. Maybe standing on end for shocked or laying down over the face more for sad.Β
Overall though these look amazing! I keep being surprised but the sheer quality of your work and get excited every time you post!Β

The only thing worth giving feedback on would be the ears.
It seems inconsistent exactly when her ears should lower or stay up.
Example: Top row 2nd column: She's afraid / shocked with ears straight up. Bottom row 2nd column: She's afraid / shocked with ears far down.
Potential Solution: I would use more half-point ear drops. In the above example: The 1st face is less shocked than the 2nd: so the ears could just go half-way down at first, then do the full drop in the 2nd one.
P.S. I'm not sure if you're already following some sort of logic on the ears or not. It just looks random and mismatched from my perspective. Hence this is feedback; not anything factual nor concrete.
Also: The example I gave was really just an example. There's a LOT of mismatched ear drops in this list; so I'm not expecting you to go back and change everything on my behalf even if you agree with me

Eh, I dunno. I don't think there really should be concrete rules whether or not the ears should be drooping or not. Usually any kind of ear poses can work with any kind of expression depending on the context. Hence why there's inconsistencies here, the context I had in mind for each of the faces I made at the time called for it to be a certain way. Not that context is really there in the first place, but it helped me imagine the faces I wanted a lot easier. Like, the 3rd row fourth column compared to 4th row second column. They are both angry faces, but in different contexts I had in mind when I made each one. The one with the wide eyed expression was more of a sudden burst of anger, while the less intense one was anger more built up over time.
