Description [link] << shameless self-advertising: open for BJD Commissions!

FIRST, I've put time and effort to drawing this, so credits please if you use it :> .
The numbers are diameter of the ball joints , the neck part is also a 2cm (missed that orz). This is for a double jointed 25cm BJD. Click download for full view (A4 sized).

NOW FOR THE TUTORIAL LINKS OUT (because I don't do tutorials, at least not for now) :
Okay I've been lusting for those resin made people thingies for more than a year now and since I'm still a poor idiot there's still a long way to go if I'm gonna get one so... since I'm a crafter, why don't I make one myself? So I've been searching all around and found quite some useful tutorials (some through months of agonizing search) and here to help out you interested people to lessen unneeded pain in the world

Here is a collection of links out to tutorials and resources for making BJDs, from top to bottom and from scratch. Which means everything you need to start making your BJD! Additional things (clothes, faceups, items, furniture) NOT included as there are many tutorials about them already.

There's also a forum for BJD makers called The Joint [link] (thx ~Security16 for the great suggestion)

LINKS:

[link] -Aimi-doll < In japanese, but contains alot of pictures. Covers the whole process of making a BJD,including eyes and hair. Mainly uses air drying clay.

[link] - Noah's dolls < Covers the process of making the body, uses styrofoam, sawdust, stone clay and epoxy resin.

[link] < gallery containing close-up shots of ball joints.

[link] -DreamsCreator SHUEN
[link] -Nonidolls
[link] -Parabox < Making a wig from wefts

[link] < wig making. Personally, I find the wig cap part quite nice.

[link] < Eye making tutorial by ~ramaon

[link] (@DenOfAngels) < Eyelash making tutorial.

EXTRA :
[link] & [link] -DreamsCreator SHUEN < not about making the doll, but the scene for photographing. Very cool xD

NOTE :
*Stone clay= Paper clay= Air drying clay= LaDoll clay. Basicly they're the same. That took me long enough to understand.

*advice :
1. read through all the instructions
2. read as many tutorials as you can because you may find that some parts are applicable somewhere else, even if the whole thing may not be so good.
3. try out other ways of doing anything
4. be versatile and be very creative !
5. Find references . LOTS of them. You'll need them
6. Measurement charts for commercially available BJDs help too.

* The DenOfAngels (DOA) forum is a very informative site for BJD stuff.

Though I'm still finding the materials to make one, I would be jealous happy if anyone would show me what they made through these tutorials^^ links to your masterpieces are welcome desu!

Ask any questions, I'll see if I can answer and if you find other helpful tutorials please comment so i can add them to the list <3

ATTENTION : I did not make all the tutorials and they belong to their respective owners. Credits go to them too so thank them, not me

I will be updating this from time to time if i find more tutorials on doll making, so stay tuned for more!

I really want to have a go at making my own clay doll. I've been doing a lot of research but i'm unsure of whether or not you actually HAVE to cast the doll? I don't really want to use moulds and resin etc, though it would be a lot easier for me if I wanted to make more! Also, if I was just to make the BJD out of say Polymer Clay or any other clay, what would I need to use to prepare and protect the doll, ready for painting?

Thanks,

steph.

TherieKardie In reply to DelightfulDreamdoll [2012-01-12 06:57:35 +0000 UTC]

well, casting a doll in resin is not compulsory, so you don't have to cast it if you're not thinking about duplication, and its also nice to have a one-of-a-kind clay doll ^^

for the surface of the doll, most artists would use a primer or a sealant. for me, i used Gesso ^^

Thank you so much for taking the time to put together such a great list of tutorials. I've found Aimi-doll to be VERY helpful, and a bit of info: Google translate does a pretty decent job of translating the site to English, even if there are a few words it can't get.

I have a question, what are the materials used to make these dolls and where can I find them?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

TherieKardie In reply to DarkLordZafiel [2011-03-01 10:18:01 +0000 UTC]

the basic materials would be either sculpey or airdying clay. they can be found in most craft stores anywhere

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 0

EggWatch In reply to ??? [2011-02-12 19:42:32 +0000 UTC]

Do most BJD owners just make them or buy them? Buying the doll is expensive and the materials for making one are also expensive so idk.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

TherieKardie In reply to EggWatch [2011-02-13 12:20:48 +0000 UTC]

I guess most of them would buy them.. cuz to actually sculpt a pretty doll you need quite an amount of skill lol

actually making one wouldn't cost as much, depending on whether you want to cast it or not, if you're contented with simply a clay OOAK doll,or to cast one in resin, which is what company-bought dolls are made of.

Casting a resin doll would be much more expensive as resin and the silicone needed for casting is no cheap stuff...simply clay on the other hand would not cost as much, but its not as durable (it would not survive a fall).

some people would even use a 3D modeling program to make it,which also helps in symmetry but 3D printing would not go as cheap either (._.)

so if you're going cheap and have the skills you can just try sculpting a clay one-of a kind ^^

Magweno In reply to ??? [2011-02-09 18:17:28 +0000 UTC]

What that is insane
I was curious about how BJDs are made and if I could make one but That is a LOT of very precise work! I think I'll have to finish some of my other projects before I tackle this.
Thanks so much for compiling such a useful list of resources, I know how incredibly impossible it can be to find all this information so it's really kind of you to trawl the net for it then share it with everyone!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

TherieKardie In reply to Magweno [2011-02-12 06:04:23 +0000 UTC]

ouhh you're welcome~~
yeah it is a lot of work xD mine has been going on for a few months now too haha

i know its hard for newbies to find these stuff lol since i now know where to get what there should be a compilation xDD

heyy if you actually made one would you show it to us? xD

Magweno In reply to TherieKardie [2011-02-12 13:34:40 +0000 UTC]

Yeah definitely, it won't be any time soon though, I'd really have to dedicate myself to it and at the moment I'm spread quite thinly.
Thanks again

Thank you!

I'm impatient to receive my ordered BJD, so imma give it a try and do one with sculpey.

I modified your reference sheet a little for that (other proportions that I prefer for this one)... Already got the rough head done. Hope it turns out well.

The links are quite helpful!
