Description
So I have 2 OCs that are a part of this humanoid race/species I created almost a year ago.. and decided to develop them more and share them with you all! This species is totally open and also 100% separate from my other species. They originate from a planet called Mieral where many of my non-species OCs reside. Mieral itself is still in development, but it's pretty loose in concept: It's much like present-day earth but if we depended more on magical energy rather than electrical/etc. Feel free to interpret their home planet as you wish if you decide to use it! It's just a for fun thing, nothing too serious.
Now for the info~
Official Race Name: Nymphae (same both singular and plural)
Race Nickname: "Nymph/Nymphs"
Additional Anatomical Notes:
- Skin is smooth but leathery in makeup and density; It's also often layered into protective, leathery plates of varying arrangements and patterns. Plates can appear just about anywhere on the body, but most commonly layer the most in the shoulder/back areas. Nymphae skin is also very waterproof and keeps dry as a result.
- Despite their skin being waterproof, Nymphae skin PORES are highly absorbent of water; Nymphae don't even need to drink if enough water is absorbed on a regular basis!
- Can come in all colors! Nymphae are typically rather cool in hue, but it is certainly not uncommon to see warm or neutral hued Nymphae as well.
- Hair only grows on the scalp, face, and back of the neck; It's also very silky, thin, and lightweight and can appear translucent if its hue is light enough in color; It's also completely normal for a Nymphae to lack any hair.
- Horns are always present and cannot be shaved down as they are covered in the same leathery, plated skin as the rest of the Nymphae's body. (They can, however, be cut or removed surgically, though most Nymphae wouldn't choose that unless their horns were too big.); Nymphae may have up to 4 horns at a time, and very rarely 6.
- Ears come in the form of two subtle slits on either side of the Nymphae's head which can be opened and closed at will; They are completely flat against the head.
- Mouths are full of sharp, jagged teeth as their main diet consists of tough fish and other seafood; Teeth can also sometimes be prominent enough to stick out of the mouth when closed. Despite the dominant presence of meat in their diets, they are actually omnivorous! Nymphae also possess long, stretchy tongues similar to frogs' tongues; Overall tongue length varies greatly when stretched.
- Fingernails and toenails are NOT present!; Their fingers and toes are very soft and amphibious in comparison to other mammals.
- Nymphae are unable to perspire (sweat) and require external moisture to cool off and stay properly hydrated; Nymphae populations tend to be more dense in more humid biomes as a result. Nymphae are also unable to shed tears as this would be a waste of water-based nourishment.
- They are also cold-blooded and often sunbathe once per day to keep warm at a constant rate.
- Sexual dimorphism is very much present in Nymphae anatomy, however it's not binary by any means; [What humans would consider] "secondary sex characteristics" are widely varied between individuals, so much that most do not possess a definite sex at all. Appearances can range from [by human standards] extremely feminine to extremely masculine to anything in between.
Abilities and Affinities:
- Fingerprints are inherently magical and are able to pick up physical information about organic objects via touch; This ability is especially helpful for things like recipe crafting and potion creation.
- Nymphae are able to levitate just above large surfaces of water; The larger/deeper the body of water is, the longer the Nymphae is able to levitate above it.
- Nymphae are very water-oriented in both their anatomy and culture; Their mental states are best near water of any sort, and the more water they are around, the more balanced they usually feel. Water is highly replenishing for Nymphae in the physical sense as well, more so than for other organisms; Water can help heal illnesses and even cauterize wounds a Nymphae may have.
- Nymphae also have partial telepathic capabilities when communicating only with other Nymphae; The closer the Nymphae are to each other, the clearer the message is. Nymphae infants can also use telepathic messages to communicate their needs to their parent(s) before they are even able to speak!
- When submerged in water, their hands, feet, fingers, and toes flatten out into a fin-like shape to aid in swimming. [Image soon]
Culture
- Nymphae are known to bathe extremely often and often have personal water pools in their homes for rejuvenation purposes, particularly ones who live in dryer climates.
- Gendered identities are purely social and used to tell individuals apart; Genders are not considered physical in their culture whatsoever. Nymphae are absolutely perplexed by humans and some other races as a result.
- Many Nymphae reside in traditional tribes, but there are also equally as many who live in more developed areas and communities.
- Nymphae communities are generally small and scattered, though there are a few that are particularly large and group-oriented.
- Adornments such as decorative body paint and piercings are very common in their culture and are a symbol of conventional beauty; More detailed or extravagant adornments may be worn during social events or formal events such as festivals or weddings.
Reproduction
- Nymphae reproduce sexually and give birth by laying egg-like vessels called "dewdrops" which contain Nymphae fetuses. Up to 10 dewdrops may be birthed in a day, and it's uncommon for every one of them to contain any fetus at all. Nymphae birth is extremely quick and easy, and dewdrops don't take more than a month to develop inside the carrier parent.
- Dewdrops are watery, gelatinous orbs that can hold 1 fetus per dewdrop. They're also very adhesive to surfaces and can even be temporarily stuck to walls or ceilings! They're around the size of a small orange at the time of birth but grow in size as the fetuses mature. After about a month or so, the child is mature enough to survive outside of the dewdrop, and the dewdrop dissolves completely.
- Nymphae fetuses look very similar to amphibious tadpoles and look more humanoid as they mature inside their dewdrops.
- Newly-hatched Nymphae, like many organisms, are somewhat feral in nature and are unable to see. Despite this hindrance, they are very active and require lots of training and discipline. They are also born with short, salamander-like tails until they eventually disappear as they mature.
- Nymphae relationships are not always monogamous, and it's not uncommon for Nymphae children to have multiple parents.
Let me know if you have any questions regarding the species or how to make one of your own! I really hope you guys enjoy these ^<^
