Photographer's Note:
"This was one of the very first images I ever took of myself with my DSLR. I know I have posted other edited versions of this image before, and that it is nothing new, but I wanted to share this final copy with you, and explain why this simple shot means so much to me.

When I was getting ready for the shoot, I decided that I wanted it to represent what I was feeling that very second. And honestly, I felt vulnerable and scared. I did't know how the public would perceive my first batch of photos. It was only after I had truly evaluated my feelings that I decided to take off my clothes and pose in the most unstable fashion I could muster, on the very tip of my toes.

After falling over in a heap of a mess for what seemed like 100 times, I finally got the shot. I wanted to share with you the truth. I look scared, vulnerable, unstable, and thats exactly how I felt back then.
Today not much has changed, I'm still vulnerable and unstable a lot of the times, but I will never again be scared. I shoot for myself, not others, which makes me happy no matter what I'm shooting. I just wanted to share this little bit of myself, and hope that it encourages people to be who they are, no matter how much they might not like it at the moment. Nothing lasts forever."

I was going to say this must have been hard to balance for the shot.

I had started typing and then read the story. Glad you were able to finally do it. Noticed you were moving to Kitchener, it is has a small town feel to it unlike Ottawa. If I may be nosy, why Kitchener?

TheSilverFoxx In reply to deviantndevious [2011-05-02 16:14:04 +0000 UTC]

lol What had you started typing exactly?
My fiancΓ©e has all his family up in Kitchener. He misses them very much. So he asked me one day if I'd move there with him for a year or so. I need to finish up a few things myself, so a small town with no distractions would be perfect for me. He also has all his Arabic friends up in Kitchener (he is Palestinian), and since I am trying to learn how to speak Arabic, being surrounded by Arabic friends and family would be great for me. Everyone we know down here is Canadian. After the year is up, we're moving to Toronto for University ^_^

Sounds like a good a reason as any for moving to Kitchener, you only have one family!Do you ever pose for other photographers? If not would you consider it? I speak a bit of 7 languages myself no arabic or anything from close to that region. I'm a bodyguard by trade looking to get into photography, it's much less dangerous and the hours will be better

No, I never pose for anyone's camera but my own. Im not a model. I am a photographer. I get SO frustrated with people who see my self portraits, ignore the emotion or technique behind it, then go straight into asking me to model for them. The entire reason I take pictures is to express myself. Usually my photos are of other women, but when I feel something so raw that I couldn't ever explain it in words for the model, I shoot it with myself as the model. Lately, I've been going through a lot of changes in my life, and as a result, have been popping out a lot of self portraits. My suggestion is to find girls on ModelMayhem.com. Thats how I started.

I understand what you are saying and appreciate your thoughts and feelings.Over the last few years I have become very serious and passionate about photography. It is my way of expressing myself and allows me to show others how I see things. Every person on the street is a potential picture. There are some people I meet or see and they say nothing to me. Your photos have inspired me and I can see a series of photos with you. So far anytime I have seen a series of photos from looking at some one they have turned out to be my best work, they just pop in my head and I want/ need to shoot them and share them with the world. I'm sorry to learn that you only pose for you but will still look forward to seeing all your new work as you post it.

Actually its my soul....
I'm telling you I have a very wild and passionate side to my soul, and the only time it ever gets to express itself is when I'm in front of the camera <3 A little music combined with an incredibly vivid imagination lands me in these poses. Glad you enjoyed them!

This is brilliant because of the absolutely honest statement. The shot is perfect with the composition and all of the technical details in place, but it's the emotion and literal imbalance that really take it to a whole other level. This is my favorite self-portraits I've ever seen and one of my favorite shots ever. I would absolutely love to work with you, Britt.

I've always enjoyed how skillfully done this photo was.

"I shoot for myself, not others, which makes me happy no matter what I'm shooting." Bravo! I am slightly different in that I shoot for the model equally in many cases, but no one else's opinion really matters all that much IMHO.

haha I know you've seen this one more then once. I just was so indecisive about it in the past, wondering if it was 'good enough' to be included in my port. Then I realized.... who cares what others think, this is special to me...and I want to share it <3
I'm glad you were able to enjoy it
