Description
Having slowly stalked her prey at the river, she patiently waits for her moment to strike.I've never drawn a Native American before, so I did. I wanted to try and be original with the design and concept, so hopefully it doesn't look too exaggerated. I know I went overboard with the rocks though; I'll be mindful of that for next time.
Painted in Painter X
Thanks for looking!

I love the waterfalls, the scenery she is in, her expression, pose and outfit! I think you did a great job in this one! But I might love it more if she hadn't shot the arrow and was aiming at something. For some reason, I thought if you added some horsemen silhouettes at the top of the waterfall would create a better story to this drawing as well. Like she was being hunted down or something.

Love the super-smooth brush strokes. It adds a surreal look to it.
Never heard of Painter X. Who makes it?

I really like her clothing! Especially the feathers in her hair-- having red feather was a nice touch. Good job.

Nice work.
You captured life in the American northeastern region before the time of the European settlers.

Thank you.
I didn't particularly mean for the character to be from any specific region of America, but that would make sense.

Looking at the background, she is most likely from a tribe that lives in the northwest.

Wow, you can tell that much? I didn't even consider it, really; I just wanted to draw dense foliage and forests, as opposed to the wide open plains and what not I usually see in this type of artwork.

Well I think the rocks are awesome! ^^ I love detail like that! And I love the strength of character in the hunter. Her clothing and design are fabulous. And the background is amazing!

Wow, I love the colours in this. The pose is pretty cool too. She looks so determined! And pretty.
I will say that I think the hand holding the bow needs to come a bit forward, and down, and be a bit larger. I mean to say, that the foreshortening seems a bit off. Also the shadow under the boobs is a bit odd.

Thank you.
Yeah, foreshortening was definitely an issue with the hand. Something to consider for next time.

I love that your style is so genuine and honest. Haha, just how I feel about it. It's very pretty, and the only thing I feel like I'm missing is a touch more distribution of the colors throughout the piece (such as the river's blue in her skin/the greenery, and the green of the plants in her clothes/the rocks, etc.). I see you're doing some of that but I absolutely love when it's exaggerated a bit, and it really helps to tie everything together.
Great job!

Thank you! As I was explaining to another commenter here, I'm not really sure if I even have a style, since I don't tend to repeat the same way of drawing and my art lacks a consistency because of that, from picture to picture. If there's anything that does have consistency, its the way I color, which I'm still not fully satisfied with, despite how much fun it is. There's so much more stuff I want to be able to do with my art that I get feelings of impatience sometimes.
And yes, I totally agree that there is a lack of value in the colors in some areas. I've been meaning to work with lower opacity and less base colors to give a more realistic look, but somehow it doesn't work out the way I like. I have to keep at it though.

I know just what you mean! I'm pretty inconsistent myself, which I think about more and more as I get older. It's hard to settle on a 'style,' because there are so many different things to love and try. Certainly doesn't help from the employment angle, unless I'm hired to emulate someone else's style.
Kudos on your determination. I'll keep at it, too.

Yeah, that's definitely true. Sometimes, when I feel I'm on to something new that might be cool, I get distracted by another style or method. Its frustrating!
I'm surprised I've even gotten any commissions with how inconsistent I've been. I don't upload very often, either.
Yeah, keep it at!

I didn't think they did either, but apparently there is a recessive gene which allows for this to be a possibility, and a brief and half-hearted google search turned up results of people claiming to be native-americans and have family members with blue eyes. Since I see no reason to lie about something trivial like that, I'd like to give them the benefit of the doubt. You're the second person who has said this to me. It really makes me wish I took those anthropology classes in college.
Regardless, she has blue eyes, and I decided that before I uploaded this and before I was told they don't have blue eyes, so for me, the eyes being so rare as to be next to impossible just makes the character that more special to me. If and when I draw other native americans, I will now have to heavily consider giving them typical black or brown eyes so as to make this character continue to stand out.
And, as a final rebutal, its anime, and folks in anime have purple, red, gold, eyes (and hair to match), so I'm not too worried here.
Lastly, consider my long reply picking up the slack for your admitted lack. LOL! We're even steven.

This is really nice. I think, for this picture anyways, the rocks are over-exaggerated like you said. If the main focus was the rocks then they're good.

Thesis-D In reply to Luciferian-Alexander [2012-12-11 07:44:06 +0000 UTC]
Thank you. Yes, I feel that in my latest picture the rocks came out better, but in this one I spent way too much time on them and it just didn't visually balance out the way I wanted in the end. I had the idea for what it would look like in my head fine, and I do have a version where the background is blurred and out of focus, but I ended up going with this version so as to not underscore the effort I had put in, even if technically they should have had either less detail.
