Description
Having slowly stalked her prey at the river, she patiently waits for her moment to strike.I've never drawn a Native American before, so I did. I wanted to try and be original with the design and concept, so hopefully it doesn't look too exaggerated. I know I went overboard with the rocks though; I'll be mindful of that for next time.

LOL! Thanks, but don't go having a heart attack; LIVE!
I'm trying to do better backgrounds lately; its harder (and longer) work, but it pays off in the end. After a while, an artist gets to a point where they can't be satisfied not fully envisioning an idea; and usually, to do that, it requires some sort of background or atmosphere.
I'm working on another picture with a background right now, actually. As long as I don't procrastinate on it, I should have it done maybe next week.

That's true. Even I do the same thing. At least experimenting with colors and textures :3 I'm curious, do you have a reference pic for the BG?
And yay! Hopefully we'll get to see another update real soon!

No, there was no reference picture for the background. I just had an idea for a waterfall at first, with some trees, but then I added in rocks and it sort of evolved on its own.
Yeah, definitely before Christmas!

The background reminds me of that style called Cubism somehow, it's way too symetrical, not that it may be bad either. As for the subject of the image, she looks nice, a little bit too animeish, plus her blue eyes make me wonder what tribe she is, I'd say she's mixed.
This maybe a little bit too devious for me to say but I'd like to think she is preying on another woman.

Yes, while I like the way the rocks turned out, they are far too symetrical, and that makes some of them look artificial; I love drawing rocks and all that gritty texture though, so I'm not discouraged by having to work harder on them in the future.
LOL, preying on another woman, huh? Just where is your mind, and how long as it been then, sir?

The rocks look like it's actually a cobbled wall somehow, though it looks nice.
And as for the girl, is it very unlikely that she be preying on another woman, considering maybe the lack of food there might be?

The thought of her hunting another human being never crossed my mind, as I would assume food is plentiful in this scenario, though she had gone through some effort to track this game.

Then she is not from a cannibal tribe, what kind is she? I mean, Apazhe, Cherokee, Aztec(doesn't look much), etc, or just a Native archetype overall?

No, she is not from a cannibal tribe nor is she a cannibal, nor is she from any particular tribe; I wasn't even thinking about that.

Wow! I really like the powerful look in her eyes. She is not afraid of anything, she is there ready to strike. I am amazed by the amount of detail this has. Must have taken you quite a while. I also see the nice combination of sharp colors and the nicely blended soft shades. I think you did an amazing job with the rocks, knowing that they are not easy to make and can be quite tedious sometimes. The details of the feathers are another striking thing, they look so alive.

Thank you. Yeah, it did take quite a bit, but I also tend to be lazy and procrastinate or do other things too, so sometimes my pictures take longer to finish because of that.
The background took longer to produce that she did, and I saved her for last, knowing she would be the least amount of work. I love painting rocks, though, among other things, so it wasn't a chore at all to make those.

It's pretty cool that you like drawing rocks, I don't think too many people are too fond of making them. They give a special look to any drawing.

Nice detail, yet you have also kept it simple to give it a cartoonish style. Her skin tone and hair are nice, but Native Americans wouldn't have blue eyes. But I do understand that this is your own character, so being accurate down to eye color isn't necessary. Keep up the good work.

Thank you. Yes, given that I draw primarily in the style of japanese animation, I still strive to do something different and incorporate either semi-realism in the anatomy, or in the coloring method (or both).
As for her eyes, to be honest, originally I thought to give her black or brown, since I've never personally seen a Native American (pure blooded that is) with blue eyes or a variation of blue/green/etc, but, despite that I did give her blue eyes, as they felt more piercing emotionally, and that felt like it suited this particular situation in the picture; black eyes could have achieved the same thing, in realism, and red eyes, while exaggerated, could have also done the same thing.
In any event, because you said they wouldn't have blue eyes, and because I wasn't entirely sure it was impossible, I did just now do an internet search, and came up with a good handful of results from people answering the question, and affirming that yes, it is, in fact, possible for pure-blooded Native Americans to have a recessive gene that would enable for this rarity to occur, but that it is in fact possible (some people described their only family members as actual proof) and furthermore, some explained it in terms of how the humans race migrated to the continents, and where they migrated from explaining the variations of how this all would be possible.
I have to admit, though, I did do a very quick skim of the information, and took what I read at face value, assuming people are telling the truth and are correct. Please bare in mind, its not my intention to argue with you or otherwise contradict you; I was just curious and needed to better my understanding on the subject, for my own peace of mind.

I absolutely adore the background and all the details you put into this art-piece! That's a weakness of mine is detailed backgrounds. The way you lightened and shaded makes everything look so smooth and soft feel to it. Her outfit looks very well thought out and appropriate! ♥ I love it so much because most people who draw native girls they portray them in the common stereotypical outfit or something highly inappropriate. Even when it comes to halloween costumes hehe. I'm happy to finally see a design/concept that strays away from the typical ♥ From the pose the expression on her face it compliments each-other very well enough to obtain the emotion that is being given. It makes me feel apart of it. It even leaves enough out in the open for the imagination to wonder and run wild, creating a story of its own to this. Only thing I would suggest is to add some depth / distance to make the picture pop out more! Keep up the wonderful work! [Ps: I'm of Choctaw decent on my mother's side.]

I really love all the detail that you put into the background on this one. It looks just as realistic and convincing as the person, so the drawing overall looks a lot more natural and believable. You did a great job with the various textures: making the leaves look different from the rocks, the rocks different from the grass, and so on.
The person is very well shaded and colored. The bright feather on the top of her head caught my eye, with the various colors that you used in it and the way it's facing the viewer directly. I also like how the person's pose has a lot of movement in it: she's holding the bow up and her hand is out from her body, and her hair is blowing around. It's exactly like she's just released an arrow, and I really like the impact of that idea.

Thank you for your detailed comment; I really appreciate it.
Now that you mention there hair, I didn't actually think of it that way, as if the force or wind of the arrow might be causing it, but that is an interesting way of looking at it. As far as her hand, yeah, I wanted to give it that 'just released' look or a paused look of evaluating her shot after the fact without having moved her hand yet, although originally she was reaching back to grab an arrow, so it differed slightly in the concept.

Nice job, Damien. I think the background's very effective (and I admire anyone who can do a background at all...and in color!). I find rocks in particular are hard to capture, and you've done that well. I like the foreground leaf in the upper left. I think a couple more of those (or making this one more prominent) would add even more depth to the picture. The figure is very well done, but there was something bugging me and I finally figured out what it was. With regard to her left hand (holding the bow), the thumb looks too relaxed. It's sticking up, which it would do if it was braced against the bow (but then it would be partially hidden from the viewer). Otherwise, it should be bent over, so her hand is almost a fist. I know it seems like nit-picking, but little details like that can give the figure more dynamism and realism. When I do an action pose, I usually get in the pose myself, and even take some pictures, to try and make it as natural as possible.

Thank you, Glenn.
Yeah, there are several little things about this picture that nagged me even when I was still creating it but that I just let go because I had spent alot of time on this and just wanted it done at that point so I could move on to something new to draw. I do see what you're saying though about the thumb; it makes her hand look relaxed, like its not gripping the bow. There's also anatomy issues I'm aware of; her torso is too long, and her right shoulder is hugging too close. Don't worry, you're not nit-picking, and in fact, I would rather people point things like this out than keep it to themselves, since its helpful for others to pick up on things I might have missed.
I haven't painted a picture with a background in a long time, so I was due for one. I still have a ways to go before I get the look I want.

nice use of scenery to complement the character. Next time why don't you make the background smaller and the river wider, so that it creates more distance and drama.

Thank you. Yes, I see what you're saying. The background does look rather cluttered this way. Originally it had more depth than this as a sketch, but it ended up looking different once color was added. I think I know what to do for next time, though. Thanks for your suggestion.

I know what you mean when the coloured version looks different to the pencil. A few things that could help you next time is by working on perspective such as vanishing points and such as well as developing natural lighting. Try to look at a real picture of a cliff and river and use that as reference next time.

Great details and composition, but I think it need something (maybe more atmospheric perspective? fog? blur?) in order to separate the person from the foreground and background more. I like that the rocks have different tone and texture. The character design, is good too.

Thesis-D In reply to Neoconvoy [2012-11-09 00:50:26 +0000 UTC]
Thanks.
Its good that you mention blurring actually, since there's actually 2 versions of this picture- this one and the blurred background version; I debated which one to upload since they both had their artistic merits, but I ended up going with the one that kept the most detail and quality, even though it would be more of a technical achievement and more realistic to go with the blurred/out of focus background, for a more natural look. I had spent so much time on those darn rocks though, that I didn't want to distort them, so I caved in to my own demand. In the future, though, when I get better at drawing, coloring, and rendering rocks, I will have an easier time letting go and doing what is more sound.
I'm glad you like the character, though. The original idea was that she was captured by some soldiers, and being held hostage; this then sparked different ideas, like maybe there are other indians that will come to save her, like the Chief, etc, but then I realize how as nice as that would have been, it would have denied me the opportunity to do something with action in it, so I ended up with this hunting idea.
She can take on Pocahontas and John Smith any day of the week though!

You're welcome!
Painting the background elements in a bluish hue could help. Also, reducing the contrast. You can also check folliage and rock photos in situations when the atmospheric perspective is seen clearly.
Very interesting. Is good that what appears as a standalone picture has backstory, and the potential to span more works.
