Description This wonderful(not so much?) little guy came to me in a dream two nights ago. This image is pleaently close to what i actually saw in my mind's eye, which doesn't happen very often.

All of the information below came straight from the dream. I havne't added or edited any of it, this all just came to my dream-self as I was fighting these creatures off.

Cookies to anyone who's actually interested enough to read it all!

In the dream they were called Shadowfell. They are kind of like moving shadow creature things, with much longer front legs than back legs, kind of like the posture of a great ape, including the fact that they can use their front legs as arms/hands.  They were sort of your generic dark purple/black shadow color, and their limbs had that sort of drippy look to them. They were not actually gooey or slimy, but their masses just looked like they weren’t held together real well, like bits of their arms would drip in tendrils to the ground when they raised them. They have a wide gaping jaw and horn like flares that swoop back from the sides of their heads. The inside of their mouths and their eyes glow a bright white-blue. This color changes to bright lava-orange when they are feeding. I’ll get back to what ‘feeding’ means in a moment.

Shadowfell normally can’t be seen with the human eye. They normally just appear as shadows, barely 3-dimensional, and just blend into existing shadows, so you can’t even spot them by seeing if there’s a random shadow that seems out of place. There is only one way to see a Shadowfell—it has to attach to you and try to steal your soul.

A Shadowfell can only steal the soul of someone it has touched. Or, a Shadowfell can be controlled by someone who knows what they’re doing, if this master person has something of the target (like a hair, for example) that they can give to the Shadowfell to touch. Anyway, once a Shadowfell has attached to you, there is no way to shake it off. No matter where you go, it will come for you. But, once it has attached, you can see it coming, so it’s easier to fight.

If the Shadowfell happens to catch someone, it will feed on or drain their soul. During feeding, this is when the normal glowy blue colors of the insides of the Shadowfell turn to orange. This is how someone can tell if the Shadowfell is feeding- if one manages to kill a Shadowfell before it is finished, the target won’t be harmed. So, if someone can get to the Shadowfell before it returns to blue, then the person can be saved. However, it does not kill the person, even if a feed is successful; it just leaves the husk of the body behind. You will survive in a sort of comatose state for the rest of your natural lifespan, as long as you’re given nutrients (like normal medical coma patients). You just won’t ever wake up unless the Shadowfell that fed on you is killed, which will return your soul to your body. And, since the Shadowfell can’t be seen again after it’s fed, it’s very difficult to find a Shadowfell afterwards to kill it and save the soul.

The other small thing about seeing the Shadowfell is that people who have also physically touched the target after the Shadowfell has become attached will also be able to see the Shadowfell, but ONLY when the target’s eyes are open.  So, as long as the target is awake and his/her eyes are open, this could be utilized as a way to fight the Shadowfell. The target can basically be used as bait to lure it in, and then other team members (who have recently touched the target) will be able to see the Shadowfell as it approaches. The kicker would just be for the team members to successfully dispatch the Shadowfell before it successfully fed on the target’s soul.

In order to actually begin feeding, the Shadowfell has to physically touch the target, and place a hand/claw over the target’s chest. If at any time the Shadowfell becomes dislodged from the target, the process has to start over. Therefore, they’re very good at rooting themselves to the target during the feeding process. Their mass sort of oozes into a half shadow form that can nearly merge with the target’s body. It becomes like a glue, in that it’s adhesive, but it’s not necessarily a sticky goo or anything. This part wasn’t very clear in the dream—it didn’t come with a whole lot of sensory details.

The first thing that happens as the Shadowfell starts to feed is the target feels extremely tired. This is a mechanism to help aid the Shadowfell in remaining hidden, because if it can get the target’s eyes to close, then the other team members can’t see it.

I read it all, and I would love to see these in a book or movie. :> They are amazing, in a terrifying way. I'm glad they don't exist!

-hands you all the cookies-

Thank you so much! I definitely want to write more about them! I'd love to get these guys into a novel based on the full dream i had, but I've never been able to stay disciplined to do that before, haha. I have about a dozen 'novels' started from all my dreams over the years. Maybe someday? haha
