Description A change of pace from the usual - my first attempt at poetry.  Just some thoughts that have been nagging me lately.

The poem is meant to be a question; my beliefs don't necessarily coincide.

===========================

Darkness - the ancient foe
Cloaked beneath a selfish silence,
It kindles war and woe
Sparking works of needless violence

It sleeps within our world
Poison in the purest water
A whisper in every word
Leading love to ceaseless slaughter

Its ageless blight
Sews seeds of dismay
As Man's riches and might
See ruin and decay

His mortal existence
Wrought ever by sorrow
His futile persistence
The tombs of tomorrow

~

Blameless, I rose from dust
Gifted lifebreath from on high
My naive heart knew no distrust
My ears knew not a lie

But in this perfect place
Temptation’s echoes call
I fell to sin’s embrace
And darkness swallowed all

A paradox of purpose
All-seeing One so great
Why leave the snare among us
To sabotage our fate

Alas, it cannot be
All-knowing One so grand,
The serpent and the tree -
A tool, but still your hand

~

For enlightenment to gain
A vessel of free will
Must first be given pain
And grasp the weapon still

Bringing at last the fruit of life
Darkness lights the way
For bearing bane of sin and strife
Paints evil in the clearest day

To shape the heart of all mankind
Another stroke is laid
For each encounter, cruel or kind
Until the Painter’s work is made

Light - the destination
If, Maker, it is true
Our pain is preparation
But what paints this of You?

Oh, these words of great importance,
Sad, they are of sorrow so true,
Plead, never to gain The Admittance,
Fade, Death laughs at the lies we all grew.

This poem absolutely blew my mind. Are you sure this is thy first poem?

Though Death's cold arms do cradle all,
Still shines a glimmering light
For mortal life is born to fall
But Love divides the darkest night

Thank you for your kind words!  It is my first poem, not counting high school.  I haven't intentionally modeled it after any set of rules - to be honest, I hated English class.

Hah! I hated English class my whole life until Freshman year. I had hated anything to do with writing whatsoever, but then my teacher did a unit over various forms of poetry. I mostly disliked it at the time, but during that summer, I started trying to write poetry, and it fascinated me.

Though I gotta say, this first poem of yours puts my first "outside-of-school" poem to utter shame.

And your welcome.
Nice poem-comment btw.

You too!  I like your form, even if I don't know what it's called.  xD

My preferred styles are Free Verse and Iambic Pentameter (10 syllables/line). I also dabble a bit in sonnets.
When it comes to placement of the commas, it all depends on the tone/mood that I'm trying to convey. Placement of the words themselves can make all the difference sometimes.

Is that what you meant by form?

Yes - some of those ring a bell now that you mention them.  Thanks for explaining.

Amazing, unparalleled truth being spoken. finally meeting a spirited soul again.

Oh- wait, so what are your beliefs?

That's a pretty big question.  I've been a Christian most of my life, but I have a difficult time with some of the aspects.  I guess I want to believe that the greater power in the universe isn't evil, and wants what's best for us.  Somewhat optimistic, considering the state of mankind, but what do we have if not hope?

How about you?

The Universe and the grand scheme is good, but earth has fallen prey to some lower dimensional beings that are very egoistic and exploit natural resources. So the problem lies in the human itself, while many are reluctant to see through the truth and they do not want to bear the responsibility. Of course some simply lack common sense and are psychopaths themselves...

An interesting perspective....seeing the universe as the focal point rather than humanity.  But what if mankind is the culmination of the universe?  The fact that only man can harness such resources might suggest that the importance of his well-being transcends that of the universe.  I guess what I'm trying to say is...what if the universe exists for us?  We'd still have a responsibility to take care of it, of course.

Again, just trying to find purpose here.

yeah it depends on your perspective of course. Actually everything happens on a mutual basis ->  The universe is alive, just as Earth and other planets. But humans do not realize this, which is why they are pretty dumb at this point. It is a Give and a Take. And it is time to realize this. Humans are not any greater than other beings, but all are equal and all a different expression of the same Oneness that exists beyond time.

*not trying to force anyone into my conviction
