Description
Focusing on Lana and her mother, Renarya, both of them have been captured by the evil Black Mermaids and placed in an underwater prison cell. Lana is stuck in human form, and with the entirety of the Black Mermaid Palace shrouded in a magic spell that cuts off magic power from anyone else, Renarya is unable to change her daughter back into a mermaid. Overwhelmed with helplessness, the Pink Mermaid Queen breaks down in tears and cradles her drowning daughter. If these would be Lana's last moments alive, at least her mother would be there for her to comfort her as she slips away.Think of this as a "what could have been" scenario from The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea. When Melody was sealed in that underwater cave with a layer of ice, what if the evil Morgana decided to trap Ariel with Melody? Ariel would be in a helpless situation watching her daughter drown and being unable to save her.

Renarya: Sounds like the residents of Rune Town. They always need to be on their guard, maybe even 24/7. We Pink Mermaids are usually peaceful, but we too have had to defend ourselves against those evil Black Mermaids. So I can easily understand where you come from. As for busting us out of here, I think you may have to break through a wall. It'll be easier than trying to dent this cage wall.

Renarya: Thank you so much, but we're not out of the woods yet. We need to escape the palace before the Black Mermaids kill us all. Once we're outside the palace, I'll be able to use my magic and turn my daughter back into a mermaid.

*Lana is still breathing comfortably through the rebreather as they swim. They keep their eyes peeled for Black Mermaids and try to avoid them at every turn.*

*And they find a passage that leads them out of the palace undetected. Immediately, Renarya casts her magic on her daughter, Lana, and she is transformed back into a mermaid. Lana removes the rebreather and gives it back to... their brave rescuer.
Lana: Wow! I cannot believe it! You were able to save us both! And that rebreather saved my life! Thank you so much!
*Lana hugs her rescuer before she can give hugs.*

My attention was immediately caught by three major features of this piece: the unusual colors used, the juxtaposition of a mermaid and a human(oid) girl, and the black grid in the foreground. The way you talk about them, I have the impression that these are characters from a story or a manga that I'm unfamiliar with. I can't comment on how good or poor a representation of them this is, but I can talk about them apart from that possibly connection.
Your body positioning and anatomy are really quite impressive. The girl is leaning into her mother just enough to be believable, and the mother's shoulder is brought around to show real interaction between the characters. She cast shadows under the mother's arms and under both of their heads, as well as the girl's left calf, do a good job of adding depth. Both facial expressions are also very well done, conveying a real sense of sadness and desperation.
I would have like to have seen the shadows and shading taken further and applied in more areas, though. Underneath both characters, on the floor, would have been a good addition, as well as in their hair, behind their backs. The mother's bangs look choppy, possibly so we can see her eyes better? It looks like a three-year-old who got ahold of some scissors cut her hair, though, and that's unfortunate. I like how you angled the stones at their feet to show depth, but those lines are hard to find behind the grid in the foreground. In fact, that grid is my biggest complaint. It obscures the image so much that it has taken real effort to figure out just what it is I'm looking at. Vertical bars, perhaps placed a bit further apart, might have sufficed to convey imprisonment without obscuring the character's so much.
It's a great piece. I hope the mom can give her daughter CPR to help her breathe. Keep up the good work!

The characters you see are my original characters, which may be why you're unfamiliar with them.
And if the mother character could give CPR to her daughter, she'd be doing it instead of crying. As a mermaid, if she were to do CPR, she would only be blowing even more water into her daughter's mouth.

First off, congrats on making the situation dire. You really know how to make things grim, lol, which is good as it looks very troublesome in that cell they’re in. I’d imagine that girl would be in all sorts of pain and panic. The bubbles coming out of her mouth help show that she’s not breathing in water anymore, and I like their varied shapes and how they go up to escape on the water’s surface to pop. The detail of brick looks nice I might add.
However I believe you might have overdone it with the detail of the brick. Since the cage is the same color as the line pattern of the bricks, it’s kind of hard to see and it’s messy. Maybe next time make the brick patterns outline a different color, and smaller and spaced here or there since it’s behind them, and put some brick patter on the outer wall, since it’s wall they’re in and not a border. There could be more flailing from the daughter, as drowning sends the body into panic, also more bubbles around her. The tears to the mother could be a bit more prominent as it is hard to see them.
Overall nice job on this. I like how they look trapped. The colors look nice, the characters pop out and they’re easy to see. You added bubbles to make it look like they’re underwater and they’re going up. All in all you did well, keep up the great work.

some scales on the tail would be nice, and perhaps change the bottom of Renarya's hair to be less... pointy I guess you would call it.
