Description
After being outcompeted by the rhinos across most of Arcadia, the brontotheres were reduced to only two species, one in Astra and another smaller species in Moega. The Astran species is the largest mammal of the region dwarfed only by the Daggerthumb and Thundertail, both of which are dinosaurs. Unlike rhinos, who have sharp horns made purely of keratin, the brontotheres have horns or crests made of bone covered in a keratin sheath and have blunt ends. Also unlike rhinos, their eyesight is quite decent, more comparable to that of a horse. Despite converging on an almost identical appearance to true rhinos, they aren't as aggressive or solitary. Living in herds of as many as 20 individuals including their offspring and led by an alpha male.
They are herbivores, feeding mainly on low lying vegetation. When the opportunity presents itself, they would occasionally eat fungi and fallen fruit. Thanks to their large size, few if any predators would dare attack a healthy adult, even the Red Pursuer abelisaurs, are ill equipped to bring down these mighty beasts. They are however extremely vulnerable to invasive dinosaur species like the dreaded Black Ripper megaraptor. Overall the real reason they were outcompeted by the rhinos throughout most of Arcadia is that rhinos had a more diverse diet in vegetation and are more well equipped in defending themselves from megatheropod predators. These two factors led to a decrease in brontothere diversity as they were driven out by the more successful rhinos and their megatheropod predators.
Even in Astra, where its generally safe from any large megatheropods and no rhino competitors, the brontothere is still a vulnerable species as they have to deal with competition from the two large dinosaurs as well as a species of ground sloth. They also have relatively low birthrates as they are unable to repopulate fast enough. They were at risk of total extinction if not for the efforts of the Astran people.
The Astran brontothere is among the first megafaunal species to be domesticated by the Astran people, a feat believed to be impossible by many. With the help of domestication, the brontotheres were saved from total extinction, however they soon outnumbered their wild cousins. Herds of wild brontothere are now quite rare and most people in Astra are more likely to see a domesticated individual pulling carts or carriages.
Scientific name: Megacerops plaustrum - " Big horned face that pulls carts"
