That is not how a meteor works, though.
I know meteors run at speeds higher than 5 kilometers per second and a direct hit to earth can create a massive explosion enough to blow trees off their standing soil and leave a huge crater. Something as small as a 2 basketballs can still cause massive damage.

This reminds me of a Lion King comic called "A False Ancestor" in which a meteor fell on a poor wandering old lion.
