Description The XL-578 is a turboprop design aimed to maximum speed and efficiency. Semi elliptical wing planform give us ideal lift distribution for minimum induced drag. Two pusher engine prevent wing boundary layer from turbulisation, in couple with natural laminar flow airfoil this give us low skin friction.Β Wing root extension and dorsal fin for stall characteristics. Midwing fuselage-wing joint reduce interference drag and eliminate nessesity in fairing. This layout also have some disadwantages in term of weight. This wing-fuselage joint will be possibly only with heavy circular bulkhead (we can't pass wingbox through cabin for passenger), maybe weight of landing gears also excessive.Β

Could you have put a forward sweep of the wings beginning at the engine nacelles for added lift and control?

How do you overcome prop tips gouging the ground on takeoff rotation? This is usually why they don't use pusher engine setup.

This is a problem, when you put propeller at tail end of fuselage. But in this pic propeller near trailing edge of wing. Very close to main landing gear, so, close to rotation point.

I can only imagine how bad the propeller-slipstream interaction will be.Β  It will also make evacuation of passengers difficult, unless of course this is a small plane.

a real beauty - inspired by piaggio avanti? (sans canard, of course)

Partly. I fell in love with wing mounted pusher layout few years ago). Now I rethink, and not so excited, this layout also have some contra, like reduced propeller efficiency and extra vibration and noise due to wing slipstream interaction with propeller. But those days I thought about this as excellent solution with clean wing and perfect aerodynamic.

yes - this is going to make a pretty characteristic sound .. people living near airports will love it 8)
