Description This one and the other two I'm uploading today have been in the works for quite a while, the blades were actually finished sometime last month but for whatever reason it took until a couple days ago to finish the handles *shrug*
This one was my first attempt at making a knife out of a file, file was dull and had run across something that left a deep gauge in it (so no yellin' at me for messing up a tool!). Its also my first attempt at burning a tang in, rather than cutting the handle in two or three slices.
Blade is a Nicholson file, handle is an oak snag, guard is from a broken belt sander (perfect thickness).

Edit: FIRST EVER DAILYDEVIATION WOW THANK YOU!

Wow, especially considering what you used to make it, this is a really good-looking knife

You've got me curious; is there a reason besides visual innovation for a handle/grip/hilt that tapers away in back and would tend to slide out of the hand, rather than a more traditional flare or knob pommel that helps the user keep a grip on it?

It's certainly gorgeous as a piece of art in any case; I just don't happen to know any blade fans who don't also prefer functionality.

If this were meant as a chopper/slicing weapon I'd have given it a more grippy handle (though its not hard to get a good grip on it), but since a daggers main (only in the case of some types) is a thrust there's no real concern about it trying to slip out of your grip. And the sharp taper was meant so that the pomel could be used as a weapon as well as the blade.

(Sorry it's taken me so long to reply; I've been out of town helping deal with my mother's possessions and estate, and will be going back to do more of the same tomorrow. If I didn't make it clear, I'm an aging aunt trying to be helpful, not a young buck trying to challenge you.)

Daggers are indeed used for thrusting (as well as blocking and slicing), but whatever one uses it for, it's important not to have it slide and spin out of your hand, which is why most serious fighting blades of any size down through the centuries have had a flared pommel and/or textured grip to help you keep hold of it even if your hand is sweaty, bloody, rainy, or covered with robot oil or alien slime.

There's nothing wrong with ornamental fantasy weapons, whether they're anime swords with blades wider than a human torso or little glass throwing knives designed to deliver dragon-venom if they strike unicorn hides. But the real-world bladesmiths who earn the most respect (and, usually, money) are the ones who make real, usable weapons, even though they're not likely to be USED for real.

A dagger isn't just something you stab somebody once with, even in a fantasy setting. It's something you wear or otherwise carry to and from your fight, whether you're bouncing around in the back of a truck or on the deck of a ship at sea or climbing over a wall; your dagger isΒ  something you need to be able to draw quickly and not drop; something you need to be prepared to parry with if needed, and so on. For example, say you're a gaming character; you're about to stab the Inquisitor's guard from behind when you suddenly hear faint noise behind you, and you whirl around--changing the position, trajectory, and angle of your blow. You don't want a grip that might slip out of your hand.

I don't know whether you've done any weapons training yourself (and no, I'm NOT one of the snobs who think it's a requirement for making or even drawing pictures of real weaponry). But it can really help understand both the physics involved and the way the human body interacts with the shape/size/weight/etc. of a weapon, which will matter to a more serious buyer.

Anyway, sorry to fall into lecture mode when you didn't ask me to. It's just--my only intention is to be helpful behind the scenes, not to prove *I*'m somehow special.

'Twasn't meant to sound like a defense against a perceived threat, just answering your question and responding to your comment in a direct manner.
And holding it, it doesn't feel like it might slip at all, I don't know if this would be the case with smaller hands but with mine its fine.
And no, no martial arts training at all, just know what feels comfortable in my hand.

neat!!!

They look awesome, but I am wondering if theΒ across-blade cuts have some intended functionality.

Some kind of micro-fullers to reduce weight? Some form of corrugation to increase strength? Both?

Those were the teeth on the file, thought it looked neat so I left 'em on along the spine.

Oh ok, I thought it might be that, but most files I have seen have a cross-hatch pattern.

This and all of your knives are awesome!
