    Josh sobbed when he heard the news. Would his brother ever get a break? Josh hated to admit it,but Alex was safer in the mental hospital. Josh loved having him back,but something always came up that forced the two apart.

   Josh sat at his brother's hospital bed. Thank God Alex had such a common blood type or he might be dead. His skin was so much paler then normal, even paler then Josh's. He was resting now,but the younger boy refused to leave until he heard his brother's voice. He wasn't a disturbance, so he was allowed to sit at Alex's side. The blood I.V. made the young teenager a little queasy,but he endured the sight. It was getting late and visiting hours would end soon. Josh could take the bus home,but he wanted to see Alex's eyes open just once. Joshua was slightly ticked off by the fact Elle didn't stay longer at first,but when he realized she needed to be checked as well, for another reason, he felt sympathy for her.

   Alex's eyes slowly opened. "Hey...Josh..." Alex uttered in a small voice.

  "Oh! You're awake!" Josh yelped almost to loudly.

   "Yeah...hehe....they got me pretty good." Alex leaned up a little,but winched in pain and laid back down. "This sucks...."

   "I can only imagine."

    "I hate hospitals." Alex said looking at his surroundings.

    "They are rather creepy...." Josh said softly, looking straight in his brother's eyes. "Alex...."

    "Hm?"

    "You have to promise me to be more careful....."

    "Josh...I.."

    "PLEASE!" Josh yipped. His voice cracked and tears began sliding down his face. "Next time, you might not be so luck...."

    Alex jolted up and grabbed Josh in an embrace, crying slightly himself. "For you....I'd do anything." Alex replied.

    Half and hour later and much discussion between the brothers and a nurse came in.

   "I'm afraid visiting hours are over, young man. Will your parents be picking you up?" The nurse was cute and petite, with tan skin, a chubby face and pale eyes. She looked to be in her early to mid thirties.

   "No...I'll walk home..."

   "Josh, it isn't safe this late!" Alex grabbed his arm.

   "YOU! Mr. Shepherd, are supposed to be resting. Don't move around so much, or the stitches are going to tear, and we don't want that, do we?" She said sweetly. She realized how much concern Alex had for his brother. "How about this, I get off my shift in a few minutes, I'll drive you home?" She looked at Alex and then Josh.

   Both boys answered,"Thank you."simultaneously.

   Before Josh got into her car later that night he introduced himself politely. "I'm Joshua, by the way."

  "Oh? Well, I'm Maria. You must be the Josh he wouldn't shut up about when he first came in. He kept muttering about you." She giggled when she realized Josh had turned red from embarrassment.

   The car pulled out of the driveway, bound for the Shepherd household.
