Description
Stage 2 of my Talon fursuit: the batting stage. I wrap the crappy foam in a layer of quilt batting to smooth out all the rough edges. His lips are covered a black spandex. You can -kinda- make out the shape of his upper lip there. He won't have that "hitler moustache" in the final, that's just the extra lip fabric. His eyes and teeth are just place-holders, they're not the final deal. His eyes aren't the shape I want them yet XD Twas just a quick fix for the photo shoot ahyuckhyuck.Stage 1: [link]

Oh cool! I'm excited to find someone else who's tried batting. I'm currently on the taping phase of constructing my head. This is the first out of maybe....5?....heads that I've done where I tried batting. I LOVE how it smooths things out and makes the head so soft and squishy. I have a question; do you use any tools (like needles) when applying the batting to get it so tight and clean? Because I tried applying it by hand and stretching/pressing it down, and mine doesn't look as nice as this lol!! Any tips?

OH thank you!!
Hm, I actually don't use anything to really tack it down. I use hot glue at the seams and major 'creases' like where the snout meets the face, and other things where I sharp detail.
I think it really matters on the type of batting you use too! There are some that feels almost like a complete 'sheet' of batting, as if it's like the fake-snow stuff you can buy around christmas. Then there's other types of batting that feels more 'fluffy,' and closer to stuffing. The shape is more amorphous and it does'nt hold its shape. I would recommend getting more dense, flatter batting that looks more sheet-like. Ironically, that tends to be cheaper kinds!

Lol I actually do use the sheet stuff! Honestly I even like buying it for plushies more than fluffy stuffing. Like being able to unroll it or change the whispyness of it....if that's even a word. Thanksies so much for your response. Btw, how did you go about patterning the head with the batting? I tried using plastic wrap first to protect the batting and any sensitive foam areas and then tape over top of it. Your work looks fantastic

Your'e most welcome!
As for patterning, I just mostly laid it on top and cut! It's very forgiving and you can fill in the gaps rather easily. As for the fur patterning after the fact, yeah, plastic wrap it super tight, masking tape it super tight, draw the patterns over it, and cut!
And thank you very much!

Hopefully when I get some free time to myself. I would like to get the right fur colors for it

this is so. epic. I love how you carved out his ears, they look so floppy and cool. He looks more mouse-ish than hyena, though, but that's cool. I kinda like it like that

I need to get fur for my current foam head... It sucks though because there's a ridge at it's top and i can't figure out how to fix it.
Lovin' that ear.

Ridge in the fur or the foam? Can you just carve down the foam for the ridge?

The foam. It's where the glue seam is.

Maybe try cutting it down with a pair of scissors?

I've been trying too. I might try taking a piece of sandpaper to it? Do you think that would be a good idea? Orrr?

Sandpaper doesn't work well with foam, unfortunately. I usually just carve it down with an electric carving knife or a pair of scissors

Hmm... Well, I think instead of taking away I'll have to bulk up, because the way I made the seam made it all wonky. X_x

Yeah, but they're so expensive and It's not like I'd ever get the chance to wear it anywhere. Plus I don't have anywhere to put it that my cats won't pee all over it >_<*
Still, would be pretty neat.

I totally know what you mean bout the cost and space D8 But there's some great tutorials on how to make cheap ones if you ever wanted to try. I usually use plastic mesh and batting, which is like $4 for the batting, and 25 CENTS a sheet of plastic mesh XD I only use like. 3 or 4 sheets of mesh if even that! And fabric at jo-annes goes on sale often, as well as really cheap materials at walmarts. If you do ever decide to make one, I'd be glad to help where I can!
As for space, that's my biggest problem lately. i'm thinking of mounting them like taxidermy heads XDDD and putting them up; so they're off the floor!

I wouldn't even know where to begin sculpting the base for the head ^_^;;
I'd rather pay someone who knew what they were doing then waste money on materials.
er... that actually sounds a little creepy the way you put it, however not a bad idea. Whatever you can do to save space.

You can always introduce it as your "head wall"

I never thought of making hyena ears like that. I want to do a partial of my hyena character next, so I will keep that in mind. The nose as well, actually.

Thanks!! n.n Yeah I think I went overboard on the ears XD but I figured I'd have to make them big, and exaggerated since everything "shrinks" with the more layers of foam, batting, and finally fur XD
